Somis Unified School District is building a new school and shifting the programmatic focus to STEAM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture & Art, Math.We live in a unique time in history. We have witnessed our world change as a result of the technological and innovative advances. Education is in the midst of equally tectonic shifts as a result of new standards and new funding strategies. Often change is precipitated by both push and pull factors. Innovation and opportunity pulls and high-hazard aging gas lines 30 inches under the children’s play yard are pushing us out. It’s time for us to pull out and plant anew. This synchronicity has gifted us a once in a lifetime opportunity to be innovators and design the place (a new school district facility) and program (STEAM) for K-8 students.

Clinton Global Initiative America brings together leaders from the business, foundation, NGO, and government sectors to develop solutions for economic growth, long-term competitiveness, and social mobility. Since the first meeting in 2011, CGI America participants have made more than 300 commitments valued at more than $15.3 billion when fully-funded and implemented.

Led the programmatic team in creating an infrastructure to support an innovative and collaborative statewide STEM regional network. Contributed to the creation of the first statewide initiative linking after school and the instructional day through the lens of STEM titled the Power of Discovery. Designed toolkits including strategic communication and data collection systems to monitor and encourage progress and growth. • Regional Networks- Led the team that created the CSLNet Regional Network structure focused on the Eight Levels of Critical Infrastructure and Levels of Network Behavior and provided ongoing coaching and support to existing and emerging networks. Coaching included collaborative planning for multiple regional kickoff events and summits. • California STEM Summit, 2012- Designed and oversaw the two-day conference that brought together leaders from K-12, higher education, business & industry, government and philanthropy. Speakers included Dr. Sugata Mitra, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and State Superintendent Tom Torlakson. • Power of Discovery: STEM2 Initiative designed to support the power of schools and community partners to expand learning opportunities in STEM. Participated in the creation of the initiative including the statewide infrastructure and the STEM Program Plan and Needs & Readiness Assessment ToolsSTEM Teacher Pathways• Braided together the Power of Discovery:STEM2 Initiative and the CSU Chancellor’s Math & Science Teacher Initiative to provide future teachers a unique clinical experience that increased their knowledge and skills in STEM teaching and learning. This program provides up to 3000 hours of additional pre-service clinical experience for candidates.

Supervised a team of professionals who provided Regional After School Technical Assistance to a field serving 16,000 children across 250 school sites in more than 50 districts and four counties. Aligned afterschool program goals and activities with the instructional day. Provided Local Educational Agencies (LEA) and Community Based Organizations (CBO) guidance in planning and implementing quality After School Education and Safety (ASES) and 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) programs. Highlights & Contributions• Led a team of professionals to conduct over 500 site visitations over the past four years. One hundred percent of the programs within the region had a personal visit and structured time for strategic conversation.• Created and implemented the Region 8 On-line Professional Development Toolkit.• Created a program plan template and training that enabled 95% of grantees in the region to successfully complete a program plan.• Provided leadership to the public schools within Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo and Kern Counties with a focus on the development of systems, shared leadership and capacity building.• Created the methodology and protocols for Region 8 site visitations comprised of strategic conversations and program observations.• Created a structure to facilitate annual collaborative meetings with each school district, bringing together district administrators, school site administrators, community based organizations and other providers.• Co-creator of Edge Up: Foundations for Successful Alignment between After School Programs and the Instructional Day, the publication and conference series that brought together districts and community based organizations to improve the quality of after school programming. This infrastructure and system has been widely adopted by 50 districts representing more than 250 school sites in Southern California.
