Resources are the foundation of all life on earth, our economy and prosperity. At the same time, the exponentially increasing use of resources is causing undesired pollution, climate change, biodiversity loss, injustice and geopolitical tensions. In addition, the imminent resource scarcity is becoming a big challenge for governments, businesses, sustainability programmes, current and most of all future generations. It remains a surprise that resources are still wasted instead of strategically and sustainably managed on a global scale. Together with colleagues in the Netherlands, Germany, Scandinavia and France, I'm setting up the Resource Wende programme to transform the current thinking and practices, in addition to the Dutch Circular Economy Programme and the EU Critical Raw Materials Act.
