From the first time I began to draw, I knew that I was different. It gave me such a rush and excitement that I had never felt before. I was 4 years old and I remember it just like it was yesterday. I know you are probably wondering how a 4 year old had such keen insight, but I assure you that I was not your average 4 year old. At 4 years old I was reading on a high school reading level and I graduated as Salutatorian from a well- known accredited Bible College. When it came to information, I just absorbed it like a sponge. In the same way, that is how I also took in things around me both visually and musically. Everyone started calling me a genius, but I was just expressing what I felt. Growing up as a young black girl in New Orleans had many struggles of its own, but despite those obstacles, I was able to live a life so rich in culture. At the age of 10 my father relocated us to Texas and memories of the culture back home were all I had left. So I began to draw, write songs, and compose pieces that expressed those feelings. It wasn’t until college when I began to take my art seriously. I went in as a pre-med major on a choir scholarship and ended up with a studio art degree with an emphasis on figure design and a minor in sculpture. I know it’s cliche, but I followed my heart, and I am sure glad I did.I have now been in the professional art space nearly 10 years. I have created over 700 commissioned pieces and am ready to step more into the gallery space to reach the thinkers and feelers like myself.If you are looking for a fresh new black art experience, look no further.
