Over the course of my career, I always gravitated to working with the older adult population. I believe what led me to this path was my father. Being the primary caregiver for my father started about 10 years ago and although my father was very independent, I felt a need to ensure his well being and happiness. The role of caregiver came with great responsibility throughout the years, but it also taught me a lot about myself; that I face difficult challenges head on, and nothing will come in my way.As my father's health declined, I was able to see the perspective of both the patient and the caregiver. I learned how to communicate with the various doctors, nurses, nurse's aides and healthcare professionals. I learned to be compassionate to my father's needs while being his biggest advocate. I learned how the public system worked, how to navigate the different levels of care and how to ensure my father always maintained quality of life. I learned that the individuals providing the hands on care need validation, feedback and a sense of belonging. My personal experience allows me to care for my clients everyday with the same compassion, empathy, sensitivity and insight, which allows me to assess the situation quickly and accurately, to get to know my customers, and to respond efficiently.I help my clients and their families with support and guidance during some very difficult times. I listen to my clients, include them in all decisions and put together a care plan that will allow them to continue to age in place at home.I have experience with post - operative care, palliative care and I will always take the extra time to ensure my clients healthcare needs are met.Over the course of the last five years working directly with the aging population I realized that this is where I am meant to be; helping families and seniors during some of their most challenging years.
