I was responsible for a team of 20 software engineers working in the data path, and the product owner of the log cleaning capability for the next generation SAN. My staff worked on three different scrum teams - log cleaning, startup/shutdown, and non-disruptive upgrades. While I was the product owner and scrum master on the log cleaning capability, I also worked with other product owners, in remote sites, to ensure a timely delivery of my teams work.

I was responsible for the development of the Disaster Recovery solutions for Dell's Storage Center product line. This includes SAN Migration, volume replication and a distributed solution called Live Volume which allowed customers to span their drives across multiple storage arrays. My responsibilities included working with program management to define the roadmap for the Disaster Recovery solution area - weighing the cost of development versus the priorities of sales and the needs of the customers. This was a truly exciting part of my job in that we were able to define the future of the product and how best to solve our customers’ challenges.On the other side of the coin, I was also responsible for any escalations in the replication or Live Volume space in the field. I would work with the sustaining organization to both proactively understand where we may see customer issues, based on usage data, and also to support them during any customer escalations.While I enjoyed all these aspects of my work at Dell, my true calling has always been around the development of software features. I was responsible for the development of features within the Disaster Recovery area. This included the schedule and also the prioritization of tasking and bug fixes. Also, the organization was compartmentalized with the GUI/management software team being managed by a different manager. I worked closely with management to ensure that the team was staffed as a “full stack” development team, both in terms of development/test and by software product management tool versus array. While there was a separate management team managing the management tool I was responsible for the full feature development from the management pane to the back end array to test.

When I joined Dell Compellent I came on board as a Senior Principal Engineer. My initial focus was on the communication path between the the two Storage Center arrays - IPC. The goal was for me to learn the code in that area and take over the future development. First thing I noticed is that there was a possiblity for the array to become compromised if the systems were not being correctly monitored by the admins. I worked with the sustaining organization, CoPilot, to mine the data from Dell's "phone home" feature to identify customers that need to make corrections in their infrastructure. Becuase of this work I was promoted to manager.
