Enrolling in a large company’s 401k plan can be the highlight of the retirement plan experience for most employees. Sadly, many retirement plan participants receive little input beyond this initial sign-up phase. Ideally, one should review the account and its holdings on a regular basis, making informed changes as needed. The account’s allocation of mutual funds should match the risk tolerance of the plan participant so that a conservative investor, for example, is not too aggressively allocated. But, unless one is a do-it-yourselfer with knowledge and background in the investment world, these important and fundamental activities rarely get done.Thankfully, many large companies allow their employees to receive advice from 401k specialists by using the Self-Directed Brokerage Account feature. This feature allows the participant to receive advice and monitoring on all or some of the total account balance. I enjoy assisting employees with these vital account management activities with their 401k retirement plans. My process allows me to match the risk tolerance of the individual investor with an appropriate fund lineup that helps with achieving retirement goals. I enjoy educating the employee and reviewing the process as things change over time.
