I have taught for 34 years, coached for 17 years, and served in student residences for 20 years. From 1989-2012 I advised and mentored students in various capacities - as an academic advisor, as a class advisor, as a Town Meeting moderator, as an affinity group leader, and as a service trip lead chaperone. I served on committees dealing with professional evaluation and compensation, faculty portfolio review, and community and equity. I embraced every opportunity available in the close-knit world of independent schools to learn about adolescent development and cognition, about fostering healthy school climate, and what about constitutes good teaching, worthy curriculum, and fair assessment. From 2012 to 2016 – and in conjunction with ongoing doctoral studies in Curriculum, Teaching, Learning and Leadership at Northeastern – I taught in UMass/Boston's Teach Next Year program, coached student teachers for the Boston University School of Education, and co-taught an online graduate-level course in Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) for educators (not for students), co-sponsored by Colorado University/Boulder and the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation.I currently am the High School Partial Inclusion Special Education Teacher at Neighborhood House Charter School in Dorchester, MA. Now in my 7th year teaching special education in urban charter schools with 90%+ non-white student populations, I am ever grateful for the continued opportunity to embrace and engage the primacy of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) to teaching, matter whom or where one teaches.These experiences share one common theme: making any school and every classroom a more likely place for each student to be kindly embraced, fully respected, broadly known, consistently engaged, and resonantly successful.
