As a storyteller who over the years has ranged across the worlds of popular culture, technology and national affairs, I use words, images, video and audio to bring readers to the story.I've been fortunate as a domestic and foreign correspondent to travel the world and cover events as disparate as the election of a new pope in Rome, the decimation of a flooded Gulf Coast town and the insights of Apple's tech design maverick Sir Jony Ive. Reporting is an honor and privilege, something you're reminded of each time a complete stranger opens up their door or their heart to you. That's true today whether you are delving into the painful and crucial story of the nation's ongoing struggle with equality and identity, or plumbing the depths of a celebrated creative artist’s personal journey. And now with the completed shift from print to digital, traditional journalistic skills have been augmented by a fluency with a range of publishing systems that put writing, editing, layout and website management skills in the hands of those closest to the news, skills that bring a new appreciation for what moves people. My job also has resulted in my being a frequent guest on network television shows as well as nationally syndicated radio programs, as well as speaking to the next generation of journalists at Columbia Journalism School and UC Berkeley. All of those instances are simply excuses to share. Best of all, my self-described job description remains identical nearly four decades after I started right out of college. I am afforded the privilege to walk into peoples lives, hear their stories and share their insights and revelations. Then, quite simply, I am charged with passing along that experience along to others in the form of a story, which is, ultimately, a humanistic transaction fundamentally as old as the written word itself. It is also one that, critically, helps us all remember that no matter our differences we all are connected by a fundamental and shared humanity.
