Profile bio

About Marco Donnarumma

I am an artist creating technological bodies to navigate the boundaries of experience. My hybrid identity as a performer, sound artist, stage director, inventor, and theorist allows me to blend contemporary performance, new media art, and interactive computer music into performances, installations, and films that defy categorization (Prix Ars Electronica). The body is, for me, a morphing language to speak of ritual, power, and technology. While rooted in performance art, I take the discipline into strange encounters with sound, machines, and light to create a sensual, uncompromising aesthetic. My inventions, such as AI-driven robotic prosthesis and biophysical musical instruments, explore visceral forms of interaction and create music from the sounds of a performer’s body. The resulting merging of bodies, sounds, machines and algorithms is considered a pioneering approach to the performing arts (Der Standard).Born hearing and then become late-deafened, I create work that, through resonating aesthetic experiences, challenges how powers of society regulate the human body. My ongoing series, I Am Your Body (2021-present) – co-produced by PACT Zollverein – explores the relationship between sound, AI, and the embodied knowledge of d/Deaf bodies through participatory research, film and performance. This series and my previous ones, 7 Configurations (2014-19) and Body Series (2010-14), are created in dialogue with scientific research, my own and that of partner laboratories.Beginning in the early 2000s, my work toured 36 countries across artistic fields: theater and dance (Wiener Festwochen, European Theater Forum, Volkstheater Wien, Münchner Kammerspiele), media art (ZKM, Chronus Art Center, LABoral, Kontejner, Ars Electronica), contemporary music (IRCAM, World New Music Days, Sónar +D, musikprotokoll), and contemporary art (Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Ming Contemporary Art Museum, Museo del Carme, CENART). I have participated in numerous festivals (transmediale, CTM, Donaufestival, Panorama) and biennials (NEMO Biennale/HeK Basel, WRO, Meta.Morph).My work received numerous awards, including the Digital Award at Romaeuropa Festival 2018 for Eingeweide with Margherita Pevere, two awards at the Bains Numériques Biennial 2018, and the Award of Distinction in Sound Art at Prix Ars Electronica 2017 for Corpus Nil. I was named Artist of the Science Year 2018 by the German Federal Ministry of Research and Education for Amygdala and won first prize in the Guthman Musical Instrument Competition in 2012 for the XTH Sense.

Listed skills include Sound Design, Art, Music, Multimedia, and 20 others.
