My research focused on strategic environmental assessment from a biodiversity and ecosystem services conservation perspective. I investigated strategic environmental assessment as an environmental decision-making support instrument, seeking to better understand the outcomes, opportunities, and risks that such an approach presents to the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services.

The Office of Environmental Impact Assessment is responsible for analyzing and issuing environmental permits for state-regulated public and private projects that are proposed in Jalisco. During my position as Director of Environmental Impact Assessment:The efficiency of environmental impact assessment procedures was increased, after the implementation of new processes and assessment criteria, in alignment with international best practice. Resolution timeframes were shortened for those projects that didn't require environmental impact assessment, and efforts were redirected to perform exhaustive assessments of projects with greater potential environmental impacts and risks.A new draft impact assessment regulation was developed, which introduces processes such as screening, participatory scoping, public consultation and auditing, and reinforces EIA follow-up. The draft regulation also considers other impact assessment tools such as social impact assessment, cumulative effects assessment and strategic environmental assessment of public policies, plans and programs.After my attendance to the 37th Annual Conference of the International Association for Impact Assessment (IAIA), the Department became member of the Association, gaining access to academic publications and discussion groups in the field, as well as potential contact with its over 1,600 worldwide members.The first pilot Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) in the State of Jalisco was developed for urban planning processes in the municipality of Zapopan and over 50 government employees at the state and municipal level were trained in the use of this tool.

Lecturer in the undergraduate course Forest Conservation in Western Mexico, with a focus on applied research in ecosystem and hydrologic restoration.Lecturer in the undergraduate course Tools for Environmental Assessment, taught in the Environmental Engineering program.

Collaborated on environmental impact and risk assessments of public and private housing, commercial, industrial, and services projects. I participated in the following phases: identification and analysis of environmental impacts and risks; design of mitigation measures; design and supervision of environmental monitoring programs; and development of environmental follow-up and compliance reports.

Collaborated on environmental impact assessments of hydropower and port projects in Western and North-Central Mexico. I participated in the following phases: research, identification and analysis of specific, cumulative and synergistic environmental impacts; and design of mitigation measures.Collaborated on hydrologic and hydrogeologic studies, as well as research projects in riverine and mangrove ecosystems in topics such as environmental flow, water quality and sediment transport; I developed experience in fieldwork and analysis of geographic information.Participated in urban planning projects in areas including hydrogeology, groundwater management, protection of ecosystem services and integrated water management.Co-authored and presented academic posters at the 31st Annual Conference of the International Association for Impact Assessment (IAIA) in Puebla, Mexico (2011).
