About Marco Peyfuss

Skilled engineer with a focus and passion for software development and test. Most recently, Marco has developed a strong interest in blockchain technology.Going into college, Marco wanted to design the next greatest mountain bike, so mechanical engineering was the degree of choice. During junior year, he joined the EcoCAR 3 team at Colorado State University. After designing a carbon fiber anti-roll bar, Marco dove into the world of hybrid vehicle control software and calibration, eventually becoming the Controls team lead his senior year. This is where Marco’s passion for software started. His first job out of college was with Honda R&D America’s, at the Denver high altitude test facility. Marco gained experience with engine real-time control systems, vehicle dynamic and emissions testing, automated data analytics, and test automation. The interest in software development only grew during his time at Honda, specifically in the areas of embedded systems and data analysis. Marco’s next job was at Honeybee Robotics on the test engineering team. His projects mainly involved testing embedded electronics and actuators for small space satellite applications. In addition to testing products, Marco also developed multi-threaded Python test software, including driver and GUI development. He has also developed a data plotting software in Python that is being used at the company to aid in data reviews during test.In his free time, Marco has gained an interest in blockchain technology and NFT/smart contract development on the Ethereum blockchain. He is working with his best friend and photographer, Ben Strauss, to develop next generation art and minting these pieces to custom smart contracts on Ethereum. These next generation art pieces utilize HTML and JavaScript to tether art pieces to real world events, create interactive art, and more.Marco and Ben started their own creative studio, Transient Labs, to bring this technology and their experience in NFTs and smart contracts to other artists and projects in Web3. He was able to quit Honeybee Robotics and build Transient Labs full time in February 2022. Marco is also converting a Ram Promaster cargo van into a camper van in his free time. He is in charge of designing the electrical, water, and heating systems. The van is capable of going fully off-grid while still including luxuries such as a refrigerator, induction cooktop, hot shower, and a full-size bed. Feel free to reach out to Marco with any questions or articles relating to any of his interests!

  • Colorado State University Vehicle Innovation Team (Vit)
Controls And System Modeling & Simulation Group Lead
Colorado State University Vehicle Innovation Team (Vit) Jun 2017 - May 2018
The Colorado State University Vehicle Innovation Team (CSU VIT) was part of the EcoCAR3 project hosted by the Department of Energy and GM. The team was tasked with converting a 2016 Chevy Camaro to a hybrid sports car. CSU VIT opted to design a P2 hybrid powertrain (engine and motor pre-transmission).I was the group lead and technical expert for the Controls and System Modeling & Simulation group during Year 4 of the competition. Year 4 required heavy controls development for hybrid operating modes, drive-ability, and safety. Modeling and simulation in Simulink was used heavily to rapidly develop the control code. The major modeling and simulation activities included:- Developing high fidelity 8 speed automatic transmission model with Simscape- Improving the software-ECU models for the vehicle model- Testing various hybrid energy management strategies using software-in-the-loop methods- Creating a torque-based power-train control strategyThe major vehicle control items included:- Fixing CAN bus transmission errors through optimized time-based control code- Closed loop idle speed controller for the electric motor- Shift dynamics control with the electric motor- Developing 4 power-train operation modes with Stateflow- Improving drive-ability through torque shaping (reducing shock when changing from positive to negative torque, or vice versa) and engine start shock reduction
