SDH, MPLS, IP & OSI Network Implementation; Support for Solutions and Network DesignCase of study: The evolution of RFI's SDH network and the deployment of RFI's IP/MPLS network.Before 2008, RFI (Rete Ferroviaria Italiana) SDH national network consisted of interconnection between legacy SDH devices (Siemens SMA Series). The capacity of the links was STM-4/STM-1 and the capacity of rings was STM-16. Since 2008 up to 2012, all backbone SDH devices (about 300 devices) was swapped with Next-Generation SDH devices (hiT7080 series) and today the capacity of links is STM-64 and the capacity of rings is 2xSTM-64. Swapping was a complex activity also from DCN point of view, because new SDH device is managed via IP, whereas old SDH device was managed via CLNS OSI. During these activities on the SDH layer, since 2008 was started the deployment of the national IP/MPLS nework (13 PE sites,6 PE/P sites and about 800 sites with an IP access by carrier-ethernet switches). Initially the connectivity beetween packet devices (routers, switches) was by VC12 circuits, today almost all connectivities are upgraded to VC4-7v or 10xVC4-7v circuits.
