About Marc Rogers

Currently on sabbatical to focus on working with Governments, Enterprises and NGO’s globally to solve key cybersecurity issues.- How to attack the cybersecurity poverty line? All organisations regardless of size deserve security.- How to improve nation level incident response?- How ro recruit more diverse cybersecurity talent while also increasing cyber literacy as early as possible?- How to bring pain to Threat Actors exploiting our vulnerable?- How to end the scourge of ransomware?- How to ensure policy makers have the best, most up-to date intelligence so that legislation is as effective as possible? My view of how security should be managed is both a proactive one and a positive one; Security should NEVER be used solely as a blocker, but rather it should be used as an ENABLER that when managed correctly enhances systems and service reliability and increases usage by giving people a sense of trust and safety. Above all I eat, sleep and breath information security. I have strong communication skills and adapt to work at all levels within an organisation. I have given lectures on information security, and worked as advisor to several TV networks globally.I was media trained by Vodafone in order to represent the company’s interests on programs such as BBC news and have a long history working with journalists whether in print, digital or broadcast as well as analysts, both corporate and private. I have been a trusted public spokesperson for every company I have worked with in close to 20 years. Perhaps the most notable examples of my work on television, were my contribution in founding and appearing on the award winning BBC series “The Real Hustle” where I designed technical scams and appeared as their on-screen security evangelist. As well as my work USA network's Mr Robot where I helped design the hacks that made the show so different. As an ethical security researcher I have hacked a wide range of high profile devices. From TouchID on the iPhone 5s and 6 through to much larger systems such as the Tesla Model S. I have a reputation for carrying out hacks in an constructive, positive way focused on the end goal of making things more secure, not putting users or companies at risk.Nominated as one of Wired Magazine's people Making things better in 2020

  • Aiam
    Chief Information Officer
    Aiam Nov 2008 - Jun 2012
Asian Investment & Asset Management & the Skylan Group owned a number of companies including several listed on Asian stock markets. Most notably, Skylan Properties, managed a number of high profile construction and real estate projects including the USD $1.5 Billion "Parc1" project in Seoul, Korea. As CIO my role was to ensure that the company functioned as efficiently and effectively as possible through best practice use of information processes, technology and strategy. With AIAM this didn't just include setting up strategy, structure and processes within the companies in our group such as Skylan. It also included acting as primary stakeholder on the project side to ensure that we adapt with the times rather than fall back on the same old recipes when there is and advantage to be had.Perhaps the most challenging aspect was the need to push back on technology being used no good reason other than the fact that it is cool technology. Technology is a fantastic tool but it MUST link into strategy and its use has to be financially responsible. This is a difficult concept for a technologist such as myself to preach, and even more difficult in the heart of Asia. The company ultimately closed it's doors when funding for major construction projects dried up due to the economic slowdown.
  • Aiam
    Chief Security Officer
    Aiam Nov 2008 - Jun 2012
As CSO I was the primary person responsible for security within AIAM, The Skylan Group, and all its subsidiaries, including several companies listed on Asian stock markets. My responsibilities didn't just extend to information security. I was responsible for all aspects of security, from information systems and regulatory compliance through to physical security and safety of employees.Coming from a background in telecoms security, this was a natural evolution from what I was doing previously. As a security evangelist I believe that security is something that should be holistic and this role gave me the platform to put these beliefs into practice.Security is not something done for its own sake. Security should take into account the whole of the business. It is about shaping strategy, policy, processes and technology in order to create the best possible climate for the business to delivery against its strategy and the best possible climate for its employees to operate within. The company ultimately closed it's doors when funding for major construction projects dried up due to the economic slowdown.
  • Vodafone
    Technical Threat Intelligence Manager
    Vodafone Mar 2008 - Apr 2009
    London, Gb
I am responsible for investigating and evaluating technology based threats. As part of my evaluation I work to understand the actual severity, what should be considered an appropriate response and where possible identify mitigation.Much of my work involves investigating threats that arise due to evolution in criminal behaviour, changes in technology and evolving hacker techniques. It is a challenging responsibility which frequently sees me having to communicate highly technical issues to executives or board members in clear and unambiguous language so as to empower the company to make the right decisions as quickly as possible.Or as one of my managers puts it, "You seem to be the one finding all the trouble, we might aswell make you responsible for it".
  • Vodafone
    Security Manager
    Vodafone Sep 2007 - Apr 2009
    London, Gb
As a direct reflection if the successes in my previous role, I transferred my responsibilities into the technology security department where it was hoped I would be able to impart some of the best practice learning’s from my previous roles. As the most senior consultant in the department I was given responsibility for my old area, telecoms, but also asked to look after the consumer marketing department and all services launched by it as well as the new online business unit. This role was a challenging combination of striving to architect solutions that met highly aggressive marketing aspirations and managing low-level security audits against stringent standards to uncover potential threats or opportunities for design improvement. My primary goal was to establish a reputation for security as a business enabler rather than its previous reputation as a blocker or hurdle. My role also required that I sit on the Vodafone UK Security Forum and the Vodafone Group Products and Services Security Committee where I helped to define Vodafone’s Group wide security strategy.
  • Vodafone
    Performance And Security Manager
    Vodafone Feb 2004 - Sep 2007
    London, Gb
In this role I am considered to be the performance and Security Authority for Vodafone Telecoms Systems. This is a recent expansion in scope which makes me responsible for security across the radio network, core network, service platforms, billing / authentication systems and all public terminals. This is often a challenging combination of striving to meet highly aggressive marketing aspirations and managing low-level performance and security audits against stringent requirements and standards to uncover bottlenecks and threats. When something goes wrong it is my team that is expected to get its hands dirty. My role also includes sitting on both the Vodafone UK security forum and the Vodafone Group Security forums. In these forums I am responsibile for reviewing new services and changes in business strategy. As part of my work in these groups I help define Vodafone's security strategy towards an ever changing threat landscape.
  • Vodafone
    Performance & Security Authority
    Vodafone Apr 2006 - Jul 2006
    London, Gb
I was seconded from Vodafone UK to the newly created Vodafone Global Service Platforms organisation in Germany. Initially this was to help manage the migration of UK based service platforms into GSP but was soon extended to include using my expertise to help prepare the German Vodafone Live! service platform for the World Cup in June 2006.
  • Vodafone
    Integration & Security Manager
    Vodafone Jan 2003 - Feb 2004
    London, Gb
After the successful launch of Vodafone Live, a groundbreaking industry acclaimed content platform and portfolio of services, I was asked to continue leading integration activities for Live! by managing the integration team. Day to day responsibilities ranged from managing the integration gateway - only allowing fully integrated and tested service from launching on the production platform through to managing 3rd line support – out of hours support of the entire Vodafone Live! portfolio.
  • Vizzavi Uk
    Snr Sysadmin / Architect
    Vizzavi Uk 2001 - 2003
    Gb
I was brought into Vizzavi UK to manage the Live! platform for the TV series PopIdol as a specialist to manage extreme situations. The original platform was underperforming badly, damaging both revenue and brand reputation. My first duty was to oversee the deployment of a new, in house, platform built to withstand serious demand. After some teething trouble I was finally able to tune the new platform to the point where it was able to handle more than 28.5 million hits per hour on the last day.Following the PopIdol project i took on more general duties as the local design authority, architecting several new services prior to the launch of the Live! project.
  • European Data Corporation Ltd
Head Of Network Operations And Security
    European Data Corporation Ltd 1999 - 2001
My work at EDC started out as a short term contract as part of my work as an information security consultant. After a few months with the management team at EDC it was clear that they needed more than just a retainer and I was asked to join the team.Initially I was responsible for all network and security operations including negotiating and designing the satellite broadcast infrastructure linking client sites and internal office systems.Ultimately with the departure of the Technical Director I became responsible for the complete technical orginisation.Sadly the organisation was unable to deliver against its potential as sufficient funding was not obtained.
  • Corpex Ltd
    Senior Sysadmin / Security Consultant
    Corpex Ltd 1998 - 1999
    Harare, Zw
As the senior sysadmin I was responsible for managing systems, system architecture, system deployment, software development, software engineering. As the principle security consultant my responsibilities were application security, security architecture, vulnerability identification and Incident management.
  • Netlink Ltd
    Senior Systems / Network Administrator
    Netlink Ltd 1996 - 1998
    Us
I joined Netlink as the company was going through a crisis. There had been some major in-fighting at board level between the Managing Director and Technical Director about poor treatment of staff, lack of commitment from the commercial organisation towards the technical organisation and lack of financial commitment from the commercial organisation towards obtaining any kind of service quality. As a consequence the Technical Director had quit taking his entire staff with him. When I started, Netlink had around 10,000 customers but was loosing them at a rate of several hundred a day. The network was falling apart and service quality was almost nonexistent.By the time I departed, the company was enforcing quality standards on its services, had reversed the churn rate, and had peaked at around 12,000 customer accounts. It was sold at that time for several million pounds.
  • Ocean Software Ltd
    Games Tester & Website Sysadmin
    Ocean Software Ltd 1994 - 1996
    Mel, Victoria, Au
Joined Ocean as a Games Tester, but soon took on other responsibilities including managing the website and looking after the helpdesk.
