Freelance

Senior Broadcast Journalist

Bbc

I joined the BBC as a radio journalist in December 1988, becoming a Senior Broadcast Journalist in 2003. I was a regular news-reader, reporter and producer as a key-worker during the Coronavirus pandemic. During five years at BBC Radio Derby I was part of the award winning news team which reported on the Kegworth Air Crash in January 1989. I produced BBC Radio Nottingham's BBC Gillard Gold Award winning Breakfast Show. This came during the second year of my two-year stint producing the programme. During that time I created the editorial environment for creativity to flourish and exclusive stories to be found and reported, while ensuring the basic news values were more than met, often leading a team of less experienced reporters. I produced BBC Radio Nottingham's extensive coverage of the 2018 Games of Remembrance, marking the anniversary of the end of World War One. This included liaising with outside organisations (inc the Ministry of Defence).I also led a Question Time style staff-training event for Public Health England. The BBC's Director General personally praised as 'simply brilliant' my successful editorial project looking at the downgrading of a town's A&E department. After pitching the idea, I worked alone to compile a series of radio reports and interviews, culminating in a public debate in a packed community hall.

Began as news and sports reporter - and was named Midlands Sports Reporter of the Year (weekly papers). Also launched music column, Street Beat, interviewing performers and pop stars; and reviewing records and live concerts.

Worked on Brian Tansley's 'Saturday Sport' show at Radio Trent, while still at school & sixth form. Recording reports, briefing the presenter, logging music, organising advertisements to be played during the show. Was named Young Reporter of the Year.
