I completed seats in our Private Client, Family Law and Property Departments. I was lucky enough to work as a paralegal in Family Law for the six months prior to starting my training. As such, I had an excellent start to my training contract. My duties included assisting in relation to Will drafting, the administration of estates and the probate process. In addition, I was able to use the skills gained in my Property seat to assist fee earners in relation to property matters that arose during the administration of clients' estates.I assisted on several complex financial relief applications and in Children Act proceedings. Duties included drafting statements, questionnaires and replies, correspondence and other necessary documents, providing advice to clients, assisting in client meetings and preparation of bundles for court.

Worked as a paralegal in both the Litigation and Family Law departments. I assisted my supervising solicitor in drafting both correspondence and other documentation. Having worked in the Litigation department, I have been able to develop my skills in a contentious setting. I had exposure to cases ranging from small claims matters to extremely complex, high value actions. I have had the opportunity to hone my case management skills. As part of the Family law team, I have been able to further develop both my advocacy and drafting skills. I have assisted Counsel at hearings on numerous occasions and had the opportunity to represent our clients myself. I have become proficient in drafting the various forms and documents associated with financial relief and children act proceedings. I have also been fortunate enough to assist on a number of high net worth cases, which often involve both interesting and nuanced issues.

As a member of this team I had a caseload of between 70 and 95 files at any one time and assisted clients with their prison law issues from the parole process to adjudications. Despite not yet having commenced my training contract, I had rights of audience at prison law hearings and was, therefore, able to represent my clients in an advocacy setting.As well as my prison law duties, I became an accredited police station representative. As such I was able to advise police station clients in police station interviews.

I was the Equality and Diversity Officer of Leeds University Union. I was a trustee and director of the £11m Charity and company, represented 33,000 students and was a student officer of the official best Students’ Union in the country. I was also a director of Bright Beginnings Nursery and a senator of the University of Leeds. My role involved ensuring that the diverse needs of the student population at Leeds were met. Some of my achievements included proposing and securing changes to policy regarding equal opportunities monitoring in the University, securing the NUS Disabled Students’ Campaign HE Union of the Year Award for my work with and for disabled students and persuading the University to commence a degree attainment investigation. As part of a very close knit team of six people we helped plan and implement several campaigns that have received national recognition. During what was arguably the biggest year for student activism in a generation we were able to rally and escort 600 students from Leeds to London for the first national student march in November 2010. We also organised a 3,000 strong peaceful march through the streets of Leeds later that year. Our work on engagement with students helped see a nearly threefold increase in voter turnout in our student elections and the retention of the Gold standard Students Union Evaluation Initiative award. We also compiled a blueprint of work for the University and Union moving forward student engagement that helped secure substantial additional funding during a time of harsh austerity.
