The purpose of this research project is to understand and make official a process for composers to compose new forms of accessible music for disabled musicians. The two main themes behind this project are the strategies required to compose music with disabled musicians, to ensure barriers are not being formed by the composer for said disabled musicians, and the techniques a composer must address which may or may not be suitable when composing for disabled musicians. This project will follow a process of composition intended for live performance by a registered charity. The charity in question, ‘The Music Man Project’ was set up to ensure disabled musicians are given performance opportunities, making them fit perfectly within the scope of this project. The compositions will be submitted alongside the process the composer will have undertaken to ensure the compositions are accessible for disabled musicians, not through alterations after the compositions have been finalised, but instead should be accessible throughout the compositional process, by means of a living dialogue between composer and performer to facilitate a successful outcome.
