I work in the field of institutional and family office investment into Australian agriculture. With 15 head office and over 140 farm staff, we operate a direct investment asset management company - AAG Investment Management (AAGIM), with operations in most states in Australia. I have over 36 years of personal experience in this field, and AAGIM has an enviable track record of achievement, generating market leading average total returns since 2005 of 12.6% net of fees. My goal is to have farmland investment recognised in Australia as the core component of every well structured and high performing investment portfolio. The reality is that it's really only Australian investors that don't "get" the thesis - much of the rest of the investment world understand the role of agriculture in balancing equity exposure and economic shocks - like COVID 19. We like "transformational agriculture" - turning under-performing farmland into a powerhouse of sustainable activity and profit. We develop new investment opportunities and we take those to the market - seeking intelligent investors who appreciate the balance between risk and return. In 2020, AAGIM commenced it's Carbon Neutral Project - aiming to have our entire FUM on a CO2 equivalent neutral basis by 2025. This program not about selling carbon credits: it's about creating low cost, practical ways to build better farms. ESG/SRI is not a buzzword for us: it's a fundamental requirement for good, sustainable, practical agriculture. These factors create resilient farms and resilient people.We have a flat management approach, believe in autonomy in return for accountability, insist on frugal but sensible spending and offer low management fees comparable with the costs of family management structures. Our firm also undertakes comparative and investment quality research and sometimes accepts interesting consulting roles which are based around the economics and financial aspects of agriculture and forestry.
