As the Chief Operating Officer I report to the Director and also take direction from the Board Chair. I lead the operations of the Institute including accounting and finance, human resources, laboratory and scientific services, information technology, physical infrastructure and asset management, research management, marketing and communications and general administration. I have simultaneously managed major projects and a range of competing priorities on a daily basis.Key achievements• Key client representative on the $130 million Centre for Children’s Health Research (CCHR) project, a multi-stakeholder research facility housing over 400 researchers. • Led the development and implementation of the operating models for the CCHR.• Led all aspects of the QCMRI 2010-2014 strategic planning process.• Contained operating budget expenditure during expansion phase of Institute, with operating costs increasing by less than 10% per year whilst the Institute grew from 50 members to over 200, and research income increased by 400% during this time. • Developed communication plan which resulted in broad media coverage for QCMRI and a growing reputation for the Institute. • Secured deal with higher education partner returning in excess of $1 million over 3 years to support the operations of QCMRI.• Contributed to the business case that leveraged a $500,000 philanthropic grant into a $5 million programme, securing $4.5million of cash and in-kind investment.• Led negotiations to establish several QCMRI groups with a University partner, resulting in additional funding flows of $660,000. • Negotiated affiliation agreement with QH's Children’s Health Service, including agreement on ownership of QH employed staff outputs and peppercorn rental for QCMRI.• Led the annual negotiations with the Children’s Health Foundation Queensland securing ~$5 million annually for research and infrastructure support. • Secured donations in excess of $500,000.

Working for the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Commercialisation), I was responsible for providing leadership and advice on operational matters relating to QUT’s major research initiatives. Key achievements:-• Developed strategic, workforce and risk management plans and implemented strategies enunciated in plans for Division and Institutes.• Contributed to the development of QUT’s research capacity building agenda, including creating the financial and policy models which under-pinned the highly-successful Professorial Fellowship scheme and Early Career Academic Recruitment and Development (ECARD) scheme and Vice Chancellor’s Fellowship Scheme (VCFS).• Prepared business case which resulted in funding to employ additional Divisional staff.• Provided high-level support in the areas of resourcing for research capacity and infrastructure, financial modelling/forecasting and reporting.• Designed a new model for the management of Consultancy and Commercial Research Overheads and submitted proposal to Senior QUT committees, including national and international benchmarking project.• Prepared the financial modelling for successful application to the Federal Government's Higher Education Endowment Fund (HEEF).• Ensured the operations of the Division and Institutes complied and aligned with existing university strategic planning, risk management and financial policy frameworks.• Provided high-level advice for business cases for collaborative research ventures, including the creation of QUT’s four flagship research institutes.• Acted as key liaison point to facilitate greater collaboration between the Division, Institutes and central support divisions.• Oversaw University Research Budget and Divisional operating budget.• Contributed to the creation of QUT Bluebox, including establishing the financial and operating models for Bluebox’s relationship to QUT.• Managed the Division's Human Resource and assets.
