About Marcus Fisher

Currently work as computer scientist, systems engineer, cybersecurity, verification and validation, and amateur radio astronomer. Currently serve as vice president for Society of Amateur Radio Astronomers (SARA), NASA cybersecurity assessments across ground and space systems, MBSE utilizing SysML and Testing of system software for Artemis missions back to the Moon and beyond. I have served as a NASA engineer on missions, a project manager, chief engineer, associate director, and director for the NASA Independent Verification & Validation (IV&V) Program. I currently serve as a senior fellow at Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) researching current and future challenges in support of NASA's missions (e.g., AI and Quantum) and currently serve as modeling and testing lead for Artemis IV&V efforts and Cybersecurity Lead.At times I am also an adjunct professor at West Virginia University (WVU) teaching computer science and systems engineering. My research interests include radio astronomy, systems engineering, computer science, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and quantum computing.

Currently serving as Modeling and Test lead for Artemis IV&V efforts. Utilizing model-based systems engineering (MBSE) and software only simulations for ensuring the safety, reliability, and security of Artemis system software. Also serve as cybersecurity lead ensuring NASA's critical systems are secure and resilient from cyber attacks. Modeling and testing projects utilize MagicDraw and Cameo Simulation toolkit to model system behavior and understand software expectations, hazards, and essential properties, Utilize simulation capability to ensure system behaviors are as expected. In combination with MBSE, I utilize software-only simulations to dynamically analyze system software to ensure adequate coverage of flight software as well as to ensure software behaves as expected. Relative to cybersecurity, I lead of team of subject matter experts to identify security posture of NASA's mission systems conducting penetration tests and researching vulnerabilities in order to improve the security posture of the Agency.Served as the Chief Engineer for the NASA Program. Responsible for the technical performance of all NASA projects, defining and developing best engineering practices, performing special studies for the advancement of NASA’s technologies, integrating best engineering practices into the development of NASA missions, capturing and integrating lessons learned for the Agency. Served as associate director with responsibilities including contract oversight, financial and human resource management, and education outreach. Initiated STEM educational outreach programs to raise awareness and advance the West Virginia education systems’ programs that support space science and space flight. Led the Program’s international collaborations NASA has with the European Space Agency (ESA) and Japanese Space Agency (JAXA).
  • Alexandria Labs
    Systems Software Engineer
    Alexandria Labs 2007 - Feb 2024
As a consultant I have provided services in the areas of cybersecurity, software testing, verification and validation, model-based systems engineering, and applying Artificial Intelligence within businesses. From static analysis of code to ensure common programming problems or known vulnerabilities do not exist within your builds to establishing system models using SysML to help drive and identify the needed requirements of the software I have worked on numerous tasks for organizations helping them to achieve their business goals. For example, most smaller businesses are rightly asking how to utilize the current trends in artificial intelligence (e.g., machine learning) to make them more efficient and effective. I have worked with smaller businesses to establish strategies and have implemented business processes and applications for them to take advantage of the latest technologies. In 2007 I published the book, Software Verification and Validation: An Engineering and Scientific Approach, which has been used to instruct at organizations implementing V&V projects and used at multiple software engineering programs in academia.
  • Fairmont State University
Assistant Professor / Coordinator Information Systems Management Program
Fairmont State University Aug 2014 - Nov 2020
    Fairmont, Wv, Us
I served as an Assistant Professor and coordinator for the Information Systems Management Program at FSU. At FSU we are advancing the disciplines in areas such as networking and operating systems technologies, project management skills, big data analytics, machine learning, web technologies, java application development, application testing, and information assurance and cyber security. Courses in which I specialize include Application Development and Object-Oriented Technologies, Database Design and Development, Systems Analysis and Design, Operating Systems, E-Commerce and Web Technologies, Information Assurance and cyber security, and Artificial Intelligence. The areas of research that I am interested in include Systems and Software Engineering, Intelligent Systems/Artificial Intelligence, Information Assurance & Cyber Security, and Embedded Systems Capabilities include:- Application development and building SECURITY into applications (desktop, mobile, web, and cloud platforms)a) software application testing for security vulnerabilities (mobile, web, cloud, desktop)b) static code analysis for security vulnerabilities (showing you where the security vulnerabilities are BEFORE testing)c) secure coding best practices (Building security into system while you are developing)- Big Dataa) autonomous object detection within images (millions of images collected in real time as video frames can be automatically scanned and objects of interest can be detected in real time (i.e. weapons)) - Information Assurance and Cyber Security: a) Building security into systems following NIST's RMF (information modeling, categorizing, selecting/tailoring controls, assessing controls). b) Conducting Threat and Vulnerability assessments up to and including penetration testing (if desired).c) Zero-day research and malware analysisd) Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) and threat detection using data mining techniques and providing real time knowledge to aid decisions
  • West Virginia University
    Adjunct Professor
    West Virginia University 1998 - 2012
My responsibilities included developing programs which included establishing laboratories that advanced the research capability of WVU, developing course curriculum, developing course materials, developing projects and exams, mentoring graduate students, and performing research and development.I successfully worked with local businesses, government agencies (e.g. NOAA, NASA, FBI), and international partners (e.g. European Space Agency (ESA), Japanese Space Agency (JAXA)) to establish an operational test center that explores potential technologies that are targeted for deployment in the field. I was successful in securing the funding and support and built the Applied Technology Laboratory (ATL) on the campus of WVU. This laboratory provides a physical presence for our stakeholder workforce to test out new ideas while actively interacting with the students at WVU. This enabled our students to obtain real world experience while providing a test capability for our partners in the community. For the Software Engineering Graduate Program at WVU I was responsible for developing the curriculum for Verification and Validation (V&V) courses. Not only did I successfully develop the course material, I wrote the textbook on V&V that is used throughout industry and government. The course has been offered for the past 7 years and enrollment averages around thirty master-level students. An objective of the course is for the graduate students to not only advance their higher learning in the field of software engineering but to introduce them to real world challenges and interact with potential employees within the local economy.Other courses that I have taught at WVU include:(i) Verification & Validation(ii) Embedded Systems(iii) Engineering Design and Analysis(iv) Introduction to Software Engineering(v) Programming and Problem Solving using C++
