Although my paintings are rarely of recognisable places, I do not consider my painting to be totally abstract but rather working on the cusp of landscape and abstraction. However, I may use abstraction as part of my working method, the use of colour, the romantic feeling and the application of paint is my subject matter and represents this rolling together of place to create a relationship with the landscape through colours and forms. My richly layered, intricate working of the paint opens a particular dialogue with my experiences of place, with the many changes of light and the affecting weather often represented within a single painting. I use a variety of textures in order to allude to the changing physical conditions of landscape, for example, thick paint contrasting with thin pencil and crayon marks etched into the surface. The process of my art is not directly concerned with space perspective, tone rendering or any formula involving the quality of literal truth or of having the appearence of the picture being or looking real, for me there is so much more going on behind and beneath all that. The aim is not to 'photograph'​ nature but to re-present nature of which I am myself a part of….I'm concerned with the fundamental reality of space, time and physical connection. I believe in using the landscape and place to express ideas about states of being and the human condition tied in with the technical qualities of the work.I use broad, often spontaneous brushstrokes, painting freely, regardless of the literal proportions of forms in conjunction with applied, well-deliberated paint swirls and splashes on the canvas. Abstract forms and resonant colour express my attempt to create a visual language for my intense experience of the environment, putting the psyche amidst the places I paint, whilst also representing the subtlest differences in appearence, meaning and sounds of the landscape.
