Founder and CSO (Vorstand F&E) of CILIAN AG, MünsterCilian is a privately held biotechnology company developing and marketing a novel expression system. The Company uses a species of Ciliates, a eukaryotic single-cell organism, for the production of enzymes and therapeutic proteins. As founder and CSO started and established the company.Primary responsibilities as CSO:Research and Development and Cooperation Projects• Formulation of R&D strategies to develop a high performance expression system for the production of biopharmaceuticals based on Ciliates (especially cloning, pilot scale fermentation and purification)• Recruitment, set up and supervision of the R&D team • Technical set up of the research laboratories of Cilian AG• Implementation of general R&D operations including a matrix structure, project management and first steps of quality management (MCBs and WCBs)• Networking with the international scientific community• Design, initiation and monitoring of five animal studies together with the CEO and Contract Research Organisations• Initiation and administration of patents and other intellectual property rights• International representation of the company as CSO on scientific conferences, congresses, partnering-, investor meetings and trade fairs

I spent my scientific career investigating protozoan organisms, particularly Ciliates. I worked for the central research department of Aventis, Frankfurt (Germany), a later Sanofi subsidiary, earned my doctorate (summa cum laude) and was a postdoc in the academic working group of Prof. Tiedtke at the University of Münster. My postdoctoral study dealt with basic research in the field of protozoa and the commercial applications of protozoan organisms, which was funded by the European Commission. Based on my extensive scientific experience in the field Ciliate biotechnology, I founded Cilian in 2001, and since then I headed the company’s R&D team and operations.I am author of numerous scientific publications, recitations, patents and patent applications in the area of Ciliate biotechnology. One of the main breakthrough of my team was the first-ever expression of therapeutically usable protein in Ciliates, human DNAse I. Later, we could transfer the unique features of Ciliates for production of biopharmaceuticals, to therapeutic enzymes, protein based subunit vaccines and monoclonal antibodies against cancer, which we tested in POP studies and animal trials. Meanwhile I am heading an R&D team of 20 technical and scientific experts with an overall total budget responsability of € 35 million.
