Some of the many issues which arose during the trial included: principles relating to the granting of a stay of prosecution; the right of the accused to a fair trial and to legal representation; claims for public interest immunity; evidentiary rules relating to hearsay evidence and handwriting evidence; listening device evidence; identification evidence; ballistics evidence; character evidence; and circumstantial evidence.
