Since January 2015 I am a self-employed Driving Instructor in my own driving school business in Darwin. Previously, I have been a Customer Service Officer, Senior Customer Service Officer, Customer Service Supervisor, and Licence Operations Manager with the Northern Territory Government, Department of Transport. Throughout my positions within the NT government, I have become adept at interpreting and applying legislation to a range of stakeholders including the public, other government agencies and internal policy teams. As the licensing operations manager, one of the main roles was writing correspondence such as memorandums to senior management including the Registrar of motor vehicles or other ministers and replying to various ministerial complaints that the licensing area might receive. From my experience in the Motor Vehicle Registry roles to my current employment as a driving instructor, I have encountered numerous clientele and duties, from writing ministerial briefs, face-to-face training, group training, training students with disabilities, and dealing with culturally sensitive issues arising from situations when providing services such as driver training in remote communities. I have always been able to tailor my approach and methods to successfully negotiate difficult situations. Even though I found the positions to be very fulfilling and rewarding at MVR I decided to further my career and obtain a Certificate IV in Driving Instruction. I worked with a driving school for around one year, where I learned new techniques, and gained knowledge and skills which provided me an opportunity to pursue my goal of opening my own driving school business. In 2015 I opened and started operating my own driving school. I have found the successful business to be challenging yet rewarding at the same time. I am currently and have been a very popular choice for people in the Filipino community being able to speak fluent Tagalog as I lived there for eight years and as I am familiar with the different cultural issues that arise, this has made me more patient and understanding when it comes to other people’s diverse cultural needs. In January 2020 I started my Bachelor Degree in Secondary Education. This has given me a better understanding of the Australian schooling system through the courses I have completed and also through attending school placements. At these placements I was able to interact with school students and build different relationships and rapport with them.
