About Marcus Kim

I never want to miss opportunities to learn. It’s what I believe makes programming such a great fit for me. I love that there is always room to grow. When I begin a new project, whether it be an internship, online boot camp session, or hackathon, I can be confident that I will have become a better computing student as a result. My first ever project began when I happened to find a video tutorial to code a simple platformer game. That feeling of accomplishment! Sure, it was a tiny thing, but nonetheless, I had done it and needed to find more. And find more I did. - Two summer high school internships at the University of Alberta taught me Java and C++ application development, native programming (combining Java code with C++), and GitHub version control.- Application to the AIS Technolabs Game Development Scholarship taught me Android app development and furthered my experience with GDscript, a language that shares syntax with Python. - The Ludum Dare 47 game jam gave me experience in collaborative development, including version control and project planning. - Through select sessions in the University of Alberta Spring Research Computing Bootcamp, I’ve been introduced to parallel programming and 2D/3D plotting with Python’s Dask, Matplotlib, and Plotly, as well as Cloud computing using Arbutus and Git Bash. And recently, I applied to an executive position at the University of Alberta Financial Literacy Club. I saw the advertisement just hours before the deadline! But as always, I didn’t want to pass up the opportunity, especially at a leading position. To me, a potential position is a new opportunity. It is the perfect place to challenge and push myself to my limits. At any new job, I am fully expecting to, and would prefer to, pick up a variety of skills in the process. Jobs allow me to self-teach or be taught outside my comfort zone. And I love the workplace environment, which is both informative and a place to collaborate alongside teammates. Specialties: Java, C++, Python (Numpy, Pandas)Other Experience: GitHub, Git Bash, Python (Matplotlib, Plotly, Dask), JNI (Java/C++)

Continuing work from the 2021 University of Alberta High School Internship Program with Professor Sturtevant. Must calculate and fully represent the Rubik's cube in a novel format, in order to further optimize the computer’s ability to solve it. These calculations are done in C++, in HOG2. Requires abstract thinking and problem solving to create algorithms that modify a Rubik’s cube, which is represented in a manner unlike any other published method. Responsible for the accurate articulation of problems to Professor Sturtevant, and the successful implementation of their solutions.

Worked with Professor Nathan Sturtevant on a pathfinding and search testbed and visualization suite: HOG2. As the framework only currently operates in Linux, it was required to use an Ubuntu virtual machine and GitHub to contribute to Professor Sturtevant’s codebase. The Rubik's cube, complete with all rotations, must be drawn in three dimensions. HOG2 only supports drawing 2D shapes, and as such, it was necessary to use vectors to manually project 3D cubes into 2D in C++, drawing each rectangular face with two triangles. Included the documentation of existing C++ code, using the documentation generation tool, Doxygen.

Assisted Professor Jonathan Schaeffer with his upcoming University of Alberta course, CMPUT 297: AI for Non-Scientists. Collaborated on a pathfinding application that involved both Java and C++ code. Completely designed and built a front-end application in Java, complete with user interface functionality, animations, and the ability to save, load, and visualize grid data, which can be used for pathfinding. Debugged and established a connection between C++ code and Java code in the back-end. Debugged C++ code which would use grid data to simulate pathfinding strategies, including A*. The end goal was for the two applications to fully communicate with each other. The application was temporarily jointly developed in C instead of C++, thus requiring development in C as well.
