About Marcus L. Stephenson

Marcus L. Stephenson is Professor and Head of the Edge Hotel School at the University of Essex. He was Professor of Tourism and Hospitality Management as well as Dean of the School of Hospitality and Service Management at Sunway University (Malaysia) (2017-2024). Prior to this appointment, he was Professor and Head of the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management at the University of the South Pacific (Fiji) (2014-2017). He also worked at Middlesex University Dubai (United Arab Emirates) as the Chair of Research and as an Associate Professor (2005-2014). He is the editor of the 'Routledge Handbook on Tourism and Small Island States in the Pacific', co-author of ‘Tourism and Citizenship: Rights, Freedoms and Responsibilities in the Global Order’ (2014), and co-editor of ‘International Tourism Development and the Gulf Cooperation Council States: Challenges and Opportunities’ (2017). All three books are Routledge publications. He has also published extensively on the sociology of tourism, especially concerning nationality, race, ethnicity, culture and religion. His current research focus is on tourism development in the South Pacific, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. Marcus has carried out research for various tourism-related institutions at both regional and international level, and supervised a range of PhD programmes. He is a member of the editorial advisory board for several academic journals, and has been an external examiner and academic adviser for various UK institutions.

As Head of School, main responsibilities concerned the development of the School's strategic plan and managing its overall operations - involving the delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes across the tourism and hospitality management subject area. The role involved responsibilities for the management of the School's teaching, learning and research programmes, as well ensuring the efficient delivery of high quality education and the advancement of strong academic standards, including flexible learning across the 14 campuses of the South Pacific region. The effective delivery of quality-driven education was necessary for meeting the institutional benchmarks set by the School’s accreditation body: THE-ICE (International Centre of Excellence in Tourism and Hospitality Education). One central element of role of Full Professor concerned fostering the development and advancement of a vibrant research culture within the School, including the promotion of research initiatives and the production of high quality publications.

I was responsible for coordinating the tourism degree programmes at the Dubai campus. I also taught on these programmes, as well as being involved in project supervision for several postgraduate degrees. From 2005 to 2012, I was the Chair of Research for the campus and was thus involved in the management and co-ordination of research activities, policies and practices for the ranging needs of academic staff; as well as ensuring that quality-driven strategies were regularly implemented. During my time at Middlesex University Dubai, I was proactive in the development of tourism research in the United Arab Emirates, and in the wider GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) region.

As the Director of Postgraduate Research I oversaw the recruitment process of PhD researchers for the department of Business and Service Sector Management. This role involved establishing programmes of related study and the coordination of staff development workshops and supervision training sessions, as well as liaising with academic staff concerning quality issues relating to the supervisory arrangements of PhD students. I was also responsible for the academic development of postgraduate dissertations for a range of MA and MBA programmes across the department, setting standards concerning the quality of dissertation work and coordinating dissertation development workshops for postgraduate students. The role involved an active commitment to a variety of university wide committees and working groups. During my time with London Metropolitan, I managed and taught on a variety of tourism and hospitality management courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level. I also developed MA programmes in the tourism field. I had an active research role, and was involved in a range of collaborative-based research projects.
