About Marcus Luther
I currently teach high school English in Salem-Keizer School District, and I also am the co-host of The Broken Copier, a Substack platform intended to support the experiences and elevate the voices of teachers. My writing on education has also been published for platforms like Edutopia and Cult of Pedagogy. I began my career teaching in rural Arkansas and spent eight years there before before moving back to the Pacific Northwest. In my time in Arkansas, I was honored to be recognized as one of 14 regional finalists for Arkansas Teacher of the Year; outside of the classroom, I have also been responsible for new teacher training with Arkansas Teacher Corps as a mentor and facilitator, with a particular focus on Classroom Culture and Relationships. At the end of the day, I've loved teaching since Day 1 back in Fordyce, Arkansas in 2012 and have never looked back. I believe deeply in how good of a place the classroom can be, and it is the privilege of my life to be a teacher—everything starts and ends there for me!

I worked for two years as the 9th and 10th grade English teacher at Earle High School. Students made significant gains in both writing and on the ACT Reading diagnostic during the 2015-2016 school year, with 48.7% growth on formal writing tasks and an average gain of 5.31 points on the ACT Reading exam. Students also successfully developed multiple counterargument synthesis papers in both grades, examining current topics such as whether or not the United States should admit Syrian refugees and how families should respond to the water crisis in Flint, Michigan.

Taught a variety of high school English courses ranging from pre-AP 9th and 10th to AP Literature for seniors, along with many non-advanced English and ALE classes. In each of the three years, students demonstrated considerable growth on year-end diagnostics. Also, in the 2013-2014 school year, 11th grade English students made significant gains on the state benchmark exam: both students from lower socioeconomic groups and non-white students experienced gains of over 20% from the previous year's scores. Multiple students passed the AP Literature exam as well.Along with supporting students to develop reading, writing, and critical thinking skills, I served in various leadership positions at Fordyce High School: Leadership Team (2014-2015), Personnel Policy Committee (2014-2015), Assistant Varsity Baseball Coach (2012-2014), and Faculty Advisor for the Creative Writing Club (2012-2014).
