Marcus’ involvement in politics and policy began in 2021 when he was selected to serve on the Transition Committee and as an Advisor to the Mayor of the City of Boston, Michelle Wu. During this time, Marcus provided high-level support to the incoming Mayor and senior administration officials in the first 3 months of taking office. As the youngest person to ever serve on a Mayoral Transition Committee in Boston, this role was important to him to represent student voice and bring City Hall into communities around the city. Simultaneously, Marcus co-chaired the Search Committee to find the next Superintendent of Boston Public Schools. The Committee held a series of listening sessions for multilingual learners, students, business leaders, and key stakeholders as the committee interviewed prospective candidates for the role of Superintendent. Marcus’ civic leadership includes six years of stewardship at Project 351, a youth-led movement for social change that unites Massachusetts through the service leadership and advocacy of an 8th-grade Ambassador representing each of the states’ 351 cities and towns. Marcus has held every leadership role for the Alumni Leadership Council; as team leader and mentor for Ambassadors, and at the helm of Project 351’s diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts as a Playbook Trainer. The Playbook Initiative, an anti-discrimination and bias-prevention program, is a strategic partnership with the Boston Celtics that empowers middle school students to lead as upstanders and bridge builders. Marcus was recognized by Project 351 as one of 45 Service Heroes for the Ambassador Class of 2023, alongside leaders including Congressman John Lewis, Malala, Greta Thunberg, Governor Charlie Baker, and First Lady Lauren Baker.

Co-Chair Of The Superintendent Search Committee For Boston Public SchoolsBoston Public Schools Feb 2022 - Jun 2022Boston, Ma, UsAlong with two other Co-Chairs and 6 members, the Superintendent Search Committee was established when former Boston Public Schools (BPS) Superintendent, Dr. Brenda Cassellius announced that she would resign at the end of the school year. I was appointed by Mayor Michelle Wu and the Chairwoman of the Boston School Committee, Jeri Robinson to serve as one of 3 Co-Chairs of the committee. The Search Committee was immediately formed and took on the task of finding the district’s next leader. As Co-Chair, I was in constant contact with Mayor Michelle Wu’s administration, BPS Central Office Staff, as well as managing the 6 appointed members of the committee. Between the months of February, March, and April, the Committee designated our Executive Search Firm; JG Consulting, and began formatting the job description to then put out the call for qualified candidates. The Committee held a series of multilingual listening sessions and ask community members to reflect on the questions that would be considered when looking at candidates. The Committee also launched a public survey for all members of the BPS community to share their perspectives; in total 507 survey responses were received. On June 21st, 2022, it was publicly announced that the Search Committee had identified two finalists, Mary Skipper, Superintendent of Somerville Public Schools, and Dr. Tommy Welch, Region 1 Superintendent in Boston Public Schools. With the identification of these finalist recommendations, the charge of the Superintendent Search Committee is complete, and the remaining components of the process rest with the Boston School Committee. -
