About Marcus Roberts
I've loved computers and programming since starting to program in BASIC on a ZX80 and have been lucky enough to make software development and IT my career. After studying Computer Science at Exeter University I went on to study for a Computer Science PhD at Nottingham university, researching information resource discovery on the early information sharing platforms like Gopher and then the World Wide Web. I worked on the problems of how to find relevant web content in the days before search engines, using distributed networks of peer to peer indexing agents.I moved to London in 1997 to work at Queen Mary as a post-doctoral research associate for a pan-European distributed systems research project, specialising in security and role based access control for a shared memory system called Perdis.Moving to industry in 1999 at the peak of the dot com boom I worked at Atticmedia, a new media company, building and running their web hosting infrastructure in the times when we ran physical servers in co-location centres. I also created web sites and software, which lead to my next job as head of software development for a 3D graphics company.I left to join Nittygritty as a director in 2006, and over the next 16 years helped grow the company from 4 to over 30 employees, working both as a information technology consultant and as a software developer. Nittygritty was acquired by Lyon Managed Services in 2022.Atvero is a document and drawing management system based on SharePoint and targeted at the AEC sector. Atvero started as a research project at Nittygritty in late 2018 before launching as a product in 2019 and spinning out into a standalone company in June 2022. Atvero was acquired by CMap Software in February 2023, and I remain at Atvero as Head of Atvero. In my spare time I contribute to open source as a core team member of the Grain programming language.
Listed skills include Css, Html, Software Development, Asp.Net, and 24 others.

Head Of Atvero
Current
Director
I lead Atvero in its development and delivery of a drawing, document and project information system aimed at the Construction industry, primarily Architects and Engineers. My responsibilities include the design of the technical architecture, choice of development systems, maintaining high quality in our development, systems and processes. I also manage the company day to day, providing guidance to the marketing and customer success teams, managing the finances and payroll and HR too.
Director
As a company director, I was involved in the day to day running of the business, HR issues, team development and mentoring, staff recruitment, business development. I led the software applications team in development and deployment of our Atvero project information management system built on the Microsoft 365 and Azure platforms. Web based front end developed in ReasonML and Javascript with React Framework calling SharePoint and MS Graph APIs, backed up with Azure serverless functions developed in C# and .net core.As the 4th line / technical backstop for Nittygritty IT engineers, I provided help and advice in resolving customer issues on all platforms (Windows server, desktop, networking, storage systems).I researched, investigated and tested emerging technologies for their potential for Nittygritty’s customer base. Past examples are Exchange Online and Office 365, DataCore software SAN, Azure services.Led the IT recovery of a 150 strong architectural practice that had failed servers, email systems and inter-site connectivity. Worked on a team delivering a successful pass of IT due diligence during an acquisition of the practice and subsequent integration of the practice into the IT teams and systems of the global acquiring company.Delivered consultancy taking over the IT leadership of a 300 strong multi-site architectural practice weeks before the planned move of staff and IT systems from the London HQ to new premises.Developed Nittygritty’s internal information management systems, primarily an integrated IT helpdesk, staff time worksheet and customer billing system.Developed BigFilebox, a SaaS solution for information exchange targeting the architectural and creative sectors. Developed as a cloud solution on the Joyent platform before moving to the newly developing AWS S3 and EC2 services. Still running today, 14 years later.
Head Of Software Development
Engaged to establish best practices for the software development team. Led efforts to modernise the application platform from a text file based system to a database backed one, allowing for integrated content management systems for the internal production team and teaching management systems for delivery of content to customers. Led the development of the next generation of the software delivered to customers via CDROM media and an online platform.
It Director
I took on three roles - internal IT, web hosting and software development.Migrated a workgroup based Mac studio to a multisystem one capable of producing software for the emerging platforms of the dotcom boom. Introduced Windows desktops, servers, LAN, leased line internet connectivity, firewalls, internal email hosting and led a 3 strong IT team to provide IT support as the company grew to 60 employees.Established a co-located web hosting environment with failover Windows clusters, Linux hosts for Internet services (DNS hosting, DNS registrar, SMTP) for clients ranging from small businesses to websites hosted for ITV.When a customer’s platform requirements fell outside of the scope of the internal software team I would develop the backend software. Examples are a database backend for a Tracy Beaker learning system for the BBC internet platform and an Oracle database and Java API for a Channel 4 game series.
Research Assistant
A member of European computer science research project investigating application of distributed systems to construction software to allow collaborative real time editing of CAD models. Specialism was applied cryptography for distributed system security.
