Teaching grades 10-12 solely in English, lessons have a communicative approach and an emphasis on connecting students' daily lives to world issues such as identity, oppression, environmentalism, and sustainable development. Students completing my courses are expected to be able to speak and write effectively on the social issues of their choice. In 2020, seniors were instructed to present on issues for improving the educational experience at Konan. I was particularly proud of the students who successfully lobbied the school to improve gender equality in both athletics and the dress code. Thanks to the students' critical thinking skills and persuasiveness, the administration elected to reverse the plans to eliminate female basketball as well as introduce a gender free uniform for the 2021 school year. During the same year, I travelled to San Antonio, Texas with a group of students to film a documentary. The students interviewed civic and corporate leaders on issues related to corporate responsibility, immigration, identity and gender awareness, and non-profit management. Upon returning to Japan, the students sought to translate the lessons learned into meaningful action in their respective hometowns and at SUAC. Show less

Students read 2 novels (leveled readers), wrote 2 essays, gave 1 presentation and debated about the safety of artificial intelligence and responsible development of future technologies. This supports my belief that students want to be given challenges that push them to their limits. The difficult tasks, thoughtfully scaffolded and with realistic objectives clearly communicated to the students, affirm that the teacher believes the students are highly capable. This in turn creates a positive atmosphere in which the students strive to reach the expectations of their teacher and gain a great deal of personal satisfaction from that effort. Show less
