About Marcus A Gray

Research Interests:The mind is fundamentally embodied. An intimate integration of mind and body supports flexible and adaptive behaviour in a dynamic environment, via the interaction of cognitive, emotional and executive processing with the autonomic control of the body. My research explores these associations in a wide range of contexts, spanning low level homeostatic mechanisms through to subtle interactions between attention, emotion and physiology. In particular, clinical and autonomic populations provide valuable areas for investigation using advanced techniques including magnetic resonance imaging. Current projects include:

The Translational Research Institute (TRI) is a unique, Australian-first initiative of ‘bench to bedside’ medical research. TRI combines clinical and translational research to advance progress from laboratory discovery to application in the community.The concept of a major research institute on this site arose from the thinking of notable Queensland clinicians including Professor Brian Emmerson and Dr John Golledge, and the vision was conceived and brought to fruition by the clinicians and scientists of the four institutions who were its founding partners; The University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology, Mater Medical Research Institute and Queensland Health. My research at the Translational Research Institute is supported by an Advance Queensland Fellowship from the Queensland Government, and is integrated with the department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane.

The Georgiou-Karistianis Experimental Neuropsychology Research Unit (ENRU) is situated within the School of Psychology and Psychiatry, Monash University.The Georgiou-Karistianis lab is dedicated to producing high impact research aimed at investigating linkages between brain mechanisms and the cognitive and motor signatures in neurodegenerative disorders.To enhance understanding of behavioural consequences of disease, enable the development novel strategies for management of symptoms, and provide ground-breaking new insights on functional operations of the human brain in both health and disease.To provide interdisciplinary research opportunities via a range of national and international collaborations, high level training of postdoctoral research staff and graduate students, access to a range of clinical populations and state-of-the-art behavioural and neuroimaging platform technologies, as well as expertise in development and design of experimental paradigms.The lab is headed by world renowned cognitive neuroscientist Professor Nellie Georgiou-Karistianis, and consists of a dynamic group of postdoctoral fellows, research assistants and graduate students. The lab has a major focus on neurodegenerative disorders, in particular Huntington’s disease and Friedreich ataxia, as well as in the study of pain in clinical populations.

The Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging at UCL (incorporating the Leopold Muller Functional Imaging Laboratory and the Wellcome Department of Imaging Neuroscience) is an interdisciplinary centre for neuroimaging excellence.We bring together clinicians and scientists who study higher cognitive function using neuroimaging techniques. Our goal is to understand how thought and behaviour arise from brain activity, and how such processes break down in neurological and psychiatric disease. Our research groups study all aspects of higher cognitive function including vision, hearing, memory, language, reasoning, emotion, decision making and social interactions.Home to SPM, a standard tool for analysing neuroimaging data, the Centre seeks to answer fundamental questions about how the brain works in order to improve human and animal health.
