The Translational Research Institute (TRI) is a unique, Australian-first initiative of ‘bench to bedside’ medical research. TRI combines clinical and translational research to advance progress from laboratory discovery to application in the community.The concept of a major research institute on this site arose from the thinking of notable Queensland clinicians including Professor Brian Emmerson and Dr John Golledge, and the vision was conceived and brought to fruition by the clinicians and scientists of the four institutions who were its founding partners; The University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology, Mater Medical Research Institute and Queensland Health. My research at the Translational Research Institute is supported by an Advance Queensland Fellowship from the Queensland Government, and is integrated with the department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane.

The Georgiou-Karistianis Experimental Neuropsychology Research Unit (ENRU) is situated within the School of Psychology and Psychiatry, Monash University.The Georgiou-Karistianis lab is dedicated to producing high impact research aimed at investigating linkages between brain mechanisms and the cognitive and motor signatures in neurodegenerative disorders.To enhance understanding of behavioural consequences of disease, enable the development novel strategies for management of symptoms, and provide ground-breaking new insights on functional operations of the human brain in both health and disease.To provide interdisciplinary research opportunities via a range of national and international collaborations, high level training of postdoctoral research staff and graduate students, access to a range of clinical populations and state-of-the-art behavioural and neuroimaging platform technologies, as well as expertise in development and design of experimental paradigms.The lab is headed by world renowned cognitive neuroscientist Professor Nellie Georgiou-Karistianis, and consists of a dynamic group of postdoctoral fellows, research assistants and graduate students. The lab has a major focus on neurodegenerative disorders, in particular Huntington’s disease and Friedreich ataxia, as well as in the study of pain in clinical populations.

The Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging at UCL (incorporating the Leopold Muller Functional Imaging Laboratory and the Wellcome Department of Imaging Neuroscience) is an interdisciplinary centre for neuroimaging excellence.We bring together clinicians and scientists who study higher cognitive function using neuroimaging techniques. Our goal is to understand how thought and behaviour arise from brain activity, and how such processes break down in neurological and psychiatric disease. Our research groups study all aspects of higher cognitive function including vision, hearing, memory, language, reasoning, emotion, decision making and social interactions.Home to SPM, a standard tool for analysing neuroimaging data, the Centre seeks to answer fundamental questions about how the brain works in order to improve human and animal health. Orygen Youth Health Clinical Program (OYHCP) is a world-leading youth mental health program based in Melbourne, Australia. OYHCP has two main components: a specialised youth mental health clinical service; and an integrated training and communications program.Orygen Youth Health Clinical Program is part of the public mental health system in Melbourne, Australia, and sees young people aged 15 to 25, with a focus on early intervention and youth specific approaches. There is a close connection with Orygen, the National Centre of Excellence in Youth Mental Health. Our innovative clinical program is comprised of three parts: Acute Services, Continuing Care, and Psychosocial Recovery. Multidisciplinary teams composed of psychiatrists and mental health clinicians deliver individually tailored services such as mental health assessment and care, crisis management, psychotherapy, medication, family support, inpatient care, group work, and vocational and educational assistance. Orygen Youth Health Clinical Program treats around 450 clients per annum.Our training and communications program provides training and resources to improve the understanding of mental health issues in young people and to promote the capacity of services and the general public in supporting young people.
