Clēnera is a utility-scale solar developer with over 1.9 GW of solar plants in operation and construction. As a Performance Engineer, my main responsibility is to monitor plant performance and production.I work closely with the Operations team to ensure high availability of plant equipment and have built numerous tools to help identify equipment issues.In addition to monitoring plant performance, I also contributed to a new ETL data pipeline including an SFTP server, Python data analysis, and a PostgreSQL database. I built a web-based data monitoring platform using the open-source Python library Plotly Dash, HTML, and CSS to better utilize this pipeline. The web platform includes data visualization, alerting, and automated reporting.I have also contributed to next-generation Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) modeling to be implemented in future projects. The modeling of these BESS projects includes both performance and financial modeling.

As an Engineering Intern, I worked in the metrology department under the head metrologist.One of my main tasks was to add functionality to Electroimpact developed automated metrology software. Over the course of the summer, I was able to add multiple features to the application. On multiple occasions, I was able to present the software and its functionality to industry clients.In addition to software development, I also assisted with designing new Foundation Reference System (FRS) monuments. These extremely low tolerance parts hold Spherically Mounted Retroreflectors (SMRs) which are used by laser trackers to identify and mark specific locations.In addition to gaining metrology and product design experience, I was also able to learn about the many operations of an industry-leading company.

The Idaho Microfabrication Laboratory (IML) is a research lab located inside of the Boise State University engineering building. The lab is focused on the research and advancement of materials and processes used in micro and nanoelectronics design and fabrication. The IML is composed of a 900 ft2 Class 1000 cleanroom, process lab, and metrology lab. Equipped with multiple tools and machines, the IML carries out many different processes, including thin film deposition, chemical processing, photolithography, and plasma etching.At the IML, I was heavily involved with many of the processes. Inside the Class 1000 cleanroom, I worked with many chemicals, including harsh acids and bases. There are multiple chemical wet benches where I conducted photolithography processes, as well as wafer cleaning processes such as HF dip and Piranha solution. Due to the use of numerous severe chemicals, I was also responsible for monitoring the lab’s neutralization system and ensured the discharged fluid was within an acceptable pH range.Outside of the cleanroom, I was involved with many more machines. I had extensive use on our AJA Orion 5 sputtering machine, which is a material vapor deposition tool that we use to coat wafers. My experience included characterizing material deposition rates, writing recipes, and general machine maintenance and troubleshooting. In conjunction with the sputtering tool, I had extensive practice with sample characterization on our J.A.W. M-2000 Spectroscopic Ellipsometer and Bruker Dektax XT-A Stylus Profilometer. The ellipsometer uses the light refraction index of thin films to measure film thickness, and the profilometer is used to measure step heights and surface features. I also had experience with our Oxford PlasmaLab 180 ICP reactive ion etcher, Veeco Me-1001 Ion Mill plasma etcher, and Rapid Thermal Processing oven. Additionally, I trained external users on many of these processes and machines.
