Business rates represent The Office Group's second largest expense with an annual rates liability exceeding £23m and an RV of over £50m, divided into over 3000 individually rated assessments. My role is to expertly manage this expense, ensuring our budgeting and monthly management reporting is accurate, and minimizing current and future liabilities for ourselves and our tenants

 I was a central member of a small, specialist team, responsible for the collection of over £540m in revenue, successfully increasing collection from 99.58% (2013/2014) to 99.78% (2014/2015). Personally responsible for managing a high income area comprising of approximately 2400 accounts, representing a potential income of over £130million per annum. First point of contact for customers, agents and external partners, handling general queries, debt collection and recovery, reconciliations, court proceedings and legislative disputes.  Developed a first-rate knowledge and understanding of Business Rates legislation, case law, mitigation strategies and reliefs along with a in depth knowledge of the practical procedures and implication involved.  Managed meetings and onsite inspections in order to discuss and evaluate the validity of claims for various reliefs or to submit reports for changes to the rating list, as well as ensuring mitigation strategies are actioned correctly in accordance with legislation.  Proactively tracked and analysed account status, chasing non payers ensuring proactive debt management solutions including enforcement action and instigating insolvency proceedings. Prepared in-depth reports and developed arguments for contentious court hearings involving complex legislative disputes, for court officers to reply on in court.
