I have been drawn to modern lines since my 20s when I was hired and mentored by the uniquely diverse Los Angeles architect, George Vernon Russell. I was struck by his devotion to simplicity, clarity – a clean approach. He was one of the original California modernists. Light is a design asset that I like to play with as much as possible. Allowing light to play through the space from various angles and through different types of windows. In many of our projects we use extruded skylights so the natural light becomes a shaft constantly changing angles through the day. We also use expansive sliding glass that allows for rooms to be open to the outdoors and for sightlines to be open through to the outside. I like to use a contrast of textures; rough stone, stacked slate, smooth tile, and water. There are always water elements in our designs – water and also a bit of fire.One of our goals is that every project exceed expectations – that we have found the balance between simplicity and drama - my job is to exceed all of our expectations. We do hope that even though our clients have studied detailed plans, and have seen a 3D video of the virtual house, that when they unlock the front door and actually walk in, that sensory experience exceeds what they could have imagined. We are gratified to have achieved the architectural expression of their desires, but a small gasp and a “Wow,” is always a good thing.
