I was also a mentor and coach to a wide range of professionals.I also provided EAP work to organisations and consultative supervision to the human service sector which I had been doing since 1992.My leadership development work has always focused around developing and enhancing the soft skills that leaders need to complement their well-developed technical skills, as it became apparent that technical skills alone were not enough for successful organisational or career development. If leaders were to be able to lead in these challenging times they needed a balance between soft skills and their hard technical skills. CPA Australia led the way here in making a commitment to the development of these skills and I provided 57 workshops for accountants between 2008-2018.During that time I discovered the work of David Rock who had also recognised the importance of soft skills in leadership. He also realised, however, that there was a need to bring a more scientific approach to their understanding and importance, to counterbalance the aversion to the word "soft" from leaders. His creation of "neuro leadership" did just that and greatly enhanced the work I was doing.It also saw me focus predominantly on the self-leadership skills leaders needed to lead successfully in these unpredictable times. There were 7 soft skills I saw as essential for leadership – self-awareness, emotional intelligence, pro-activity and resilience. They also needed high energy, the ability to integrate their life at work and outside work and to be a connector, building networks of mutually supportive relationships.Post COVID, however, I am more sharply focusing my leadership development work, specialising in mentoring, believing it is the most effective process for change and transformation in leaders. -
