About Margaret Hebert

I am a graduate student pursuing a PhD in chemistry at the University of Texas at Austin. As a graduate researcher advised by Sean Roberts. I build optical spectroscopy setups to study nanomaterials and use computation to inform our interpretation of the spectra. My work focuses on the structure and aggregation of ligands on the surface of semiconductor nanocrystals and how this effect energy transfer across the interface. After completing my doctoral program, I hope to use my skills in optical setup design and building in my career as a research scientist. My research experience spans analytical, physical, and materials chemistry. My undergraduate thesis focused on designing a method to measure real time kinetics of aqueous solutions using mass spectrometry. In graduate school, I have enhanced the resolution and speed of our 2D-ES set up through a combination of using Labview to change data processing and storage as well as through adding extra compression steps. Additionally, I have mentored two first year undergraduate researchers through their first research experience. My research has given me a chance to develop skills around the engineering and building of scientific instrumentation, the modeling of complex chemical systems, and the mentoring of junior scientists. I am excited about exploring opportunities in both industry and academia that focus on ultrafast spectroscopy and materials science.
