About Margaret Lund (Née Hock)

My work is primarily focused on data analysis for dynamic material studies. While I work on all aspects of the analysis process, my specialties are statistics and machine learning, particularly for applications requiring quantified uncertainties and sensitivities. My research interests are mathematics and statistics of data science, applied machine learning, uncertainty quantification, radiography, tomography, and mathematical modeling of scientific measurement systems.

Margaret Lund (Née Hock) Work Experience Details
  • Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
    Data Scientist
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Sep 2022 - Present
  • Nevada National Security Site
    Senior Scientist
Nevada National Security Site May 2019 - Sep 2022
    • Performed data analysis for dynamic material studies, and developed new methods, with associated uncertainty and sensitivity quantification, for radiography, metrology, and interferometry, including brand-new diagnostics as well as novel fielding setups for existing diagnostics• PI on a 2-year, $568k project using deep learning with uncertainty quantification for radiography (Featured in FY22Q2 LDRD Quarterly Highlights.)• Developed novel analytics and controls for automating experimental measurement systems• Strong history of university outreach and student mentorship- advised 10 undergraduate student semester-long research projects, advised 8 REU students’ summer research projects, and supported 4 summer interns, in addition to regular volunteer activities with younger student groups
  • Nevada National Security Site
    Scientist Ii (Casual Status)
Nevada National Security Site Jul 2016 - May 2019
Worked on the design, implementation, and evaluation of a new algorithm, locally adaptive discriminant analysis (LADA), that successfully identifies boundaries, with quantified uncertainties, in challenging radiographs from dynamic material studies in support of Stockpile Stewardship
  • Nevada National Security Site
    Intern
Nevada National Security Site May 2014 - Jul 2016
I was an intern on the Signal Processing & Applied Math team for 2014, 2015, and 2016. I studied hyperprior parameters in hierarchical Bayesian models and helped develop statistically justified error bars for the solutions to linear inverse problems using a Markov chain Monte Carlo approach and spatially varying priors. Our paper, Bayesian Abel Inversion in Quantitative X-Ray Radiography, was published in SISC and highlighted in SIAM Nugget Bytes.
  • The University Of Alabama In Huntsville
    Research Assistant
The University Of Alabama In Huntsville Jan 2017 - May 2019
I designed novel anisotropic variant of LADA for robust analysis and UQ, for application to mission-critical radiographs from dynamic material studies and collaborated with MIT and Lawrence Livermore National Lab to analyze images from high velocity physics experiments
  • Saint Louis University
    Computer Science Tutor
Saint Louis University Jan 2013 - May 2014
Tutor in the Saint Louis University Linux Lab for students learning MATLAB and C++
  • Saint Louis University
    Physics Lab Teaching Assistant
Saint Louis University May 2013 - Aug 2013
Taught all summer physics labs at Saint Louis University. This included setting up lab stations, giving lectures, monitoring labs, grading, and taking inventory of the physics storeroom.
  • Saint Louis University
    Superconductivity Research Assistant
Saint Louis University Jan 2012 - May 2012
Worked for Dr. Martin Nikolo researching the superconductive properties of Cobalt and Potassium. Work involved extensive use of Origin Software.
