Duties & responsibilities include communication with the surgeon, anesthesiologist, peers& ancillary departments to promoteexcellence in patient care as well as optimal flow of the department. I rotate roles asthe Charge Nurse while providing patientcare during the pre-operative admission process, recovering the patient in Phase I &Phase II. A large portion of our patients were Orthopedic, whether total jointreplacement, traumatic limb injury or a dislocated hip reduction. We also saw generalsurgery, ENT, dental & cosmetic procedures. Utilizing the Nursing Process, perform a thorough assessmenton every patient. Follow M.D orders, review lab & EKG results reporting abnormalfindings. Obtain proper consents, establish an IV, access PICC Line or Port-a-catheter with a Huber Needle. Administer medication as ordered& provide patient teaching, while includingtheir adult companion, prior to sedation. Thorough documentation includes assessmentfindings, any event, intervention & outcomein a timely manner. PHASE I AIRWAY Assess & intervene to ensure a patent airway with the appropriate oxygendelivery. After initial A,B,C'S are managed, complete the assessment with an emphasis on the surgical site while anticipating possibleadverse reactions pertinant to that patient& the procedure performed. Provide pain control, prevent or reverse nausea & vomiting,correct a problematic arrhythmia & excessivebleeding. PHASE II: Continue assessing, evaluating interventions& anticipate the patients' discharge home. Ween off of oxygen, provide an oral fluidchallenge & encourage voiding prior to discharge ifappropriate. Instruct & demonstrate any device, application or supply to be sent homewith the patient. Call prescriptions to the patients'pharmacy of choice. Escort the patient out of the facility, usually in a wheelchair withthe adult companion driving the patient home.

This is a rural resort hospital located in the Eastern Sierras. The community hosts World Class Ski, Snowboarding & Motocross Competitions every year. Some of our orthopedic team travels with the U.S. Ski Team to provide medical care while they are touring.Major Traumas from mountain sports, motor vehicle accidents or industrial events are all brought to Mammoth Hospital. Major Traumas & Critical Cardiac patients are stabilized & treated until they are appropriate for transfer to a higher level of care. Although we area small Rural Facility, we care for the same patients who would otherwise be taken to a Level I Center. Duties & responsibilities include rotating roles of Staff Nurse to Charge, Triage & Mobile Intensive Care Nurse. I work closely with the ER physician & peers to problem solve, assist with suturingto inserting chest tubes & intubation. We treat everything from a minor sore throat, UTI, pneumonia, hypothermia & CHF to generalsurgery problems. The RN establishes the IV, including accessing a PICC Line & Port-a-catheter, drew bloods & ABG, begin breathingtreatments, request labs & EKG while communicating with the physician. We'd correct a new onset Atrial Fibrillation, Supra-ventricularArrhythmias and administer Retaplase to critical cardiac patients prior to transfer.

UCSD Medical Center, San Diego, CAExpectations are high for the RN in a Level I Trauma Center. I developed excellent assessment skills, promptly intervened & evaluated outcomes many times on each patient while working closely with Interns, Residents & Attending Physicians. The nurse not only worksas a team player, but must function autonomously. Our clientele included athletes, tourists, the financially challenged homeless with acute& chronic medical problems. On a daily basis we treated drug overdoses, curbside baby deliveries, major traumas, CVA & critical cardiacpatients. Medical problems from an acute flare up of Lupus to Guillain-Barre Syndrome & Lou Gehrig's Disease. Active GI bleeds withruptured varices bleeding from every orifice & diving accidents brought to us from the nearby water ways. Severely burned patients werebrought to the ER for stabilization, then taken upstairs to our Burn Unit. The RN was responsible for total patient care from triage to dispositions.The RN establishes the IV, draws blood & ABG, administers blood products when indicated &administeres Factor to hemophiliacs. We assist the physician with all procedures from wound care to life saving interventions. Tubes in every orifice was a daily occurrenceon several patients. Learning to prioritize & organization was key to multitasking without sacrificing patient care.
