Duties & responsibilities include communication with the surgeon, anesthesiologist, peers& ancillary departments to promoteexcellence in patient care as well as optimal flow of the department. I rotate roles asthe Charge Nurse while providing patientcare during the pre-operative admission process, recovering the patient in Phase I &Phase II. A large portion of our patients were Orthopedic, whether total jointreplacement, traumatic limb injury or a dislocated hip reduction. We also saw generalsurgery, ENT, dental & cosmetic procedures. Utilizing the Nursing Process, perform a thorough assessmenton every patient. Follow M.D orders, review lab & EKG results reporting abnormalfindings. Obtain proper consents, establish an IV, access PICC Line or Port-a-catheter with a Huber Needle. Administer medication as ordered& provide patient teaching, while includingtheir adult companion, prior to sedation. Thorough documentation includes assessmentfindings, any event, intervention & outcomein a timely manner. PHASE I AIRWAY Assess & intervene to ensure a patent airway with the appropriate oxygendelivery. After initial A,B,C'S are managed, complete the assessment with an emphasis on the surgical site while anticipating possibleadverse reactions pertinant to that patient& the procedure performed. Provide pain control, prevent or reverse nausea & vomiting,correct a problematic arrhythmia & excessivebleeding. PHASE II: Continue assessing, evaluating interventions& anticipate the patients' discharge home. Ween off of oxygen, provide an oral fluidchallenge & encourage voiding prior to discharge ifappropriate. Instruct & demonstrate any device, application or supply to be sent homewith the patient. Call prescriptions to the patients'pharmacy of choice. Escort the patient out of the facility, usually in a wheelchair withthe adult companion driving the patient home.
