About Margaret Richards

I am an Independent Consultant with 15+ years' experience in the international development field. With a background in applied mathematics and education, I help institutions both teach others (through trainings, learning networks, curriculum development, e-learning design, etc.) and learn about internal processes and programs (strategic planning, goal setting, data collection & use). I have worked in the education, financial services, clean energy, health and youth development sectors. Much of my work has focused on reaching marginalized groups (ultra-poor in the global south, under-served American urban youth). I believe in systems-thinking, user-centered design and a critical approach to data for decision-making. I do not believe in lip-service. Data doesn't 'make' decisions for us, nor do AI/ ML applications. Human strengths and weaknesses, biases and expertise are always tilting the levers. EDI/DEI aren't trends and aren't nouns.

I have worked with small and large non-profit organizations, donor organizations and consulting firms on projects domestically and abroad. With the bulk of my experience in the international development field, I have worked across numerous development sectors including financial services / microfinance, poverty alleviation and outreach, education and youth development, health, mental health and clean energy.
