About Margaret Woo

I am a tree-hugger at heart, and as a result, I like to save time and energy. I prefer to design "just enough" to save time for the very near future (instead of over-engineering). I like to get things done. I like to rule out bad ideas as fast as possible (to stop wasting time). I am a staunch advocate of collaborative coding (pair programming, peer reviews).I learn new coding languages fairly quickly. Some languages I have spent time in (but don't have solid work experience with) include Ruby, Elixir, and Kotlin.Specialties: Lots: Java 1.8, JUnit, Mockito, TDD, SpringBoot/SpringRunner, NodeJs, Mocha, Jasmine, HTML, Javascript, Git, SQLSome: CSS, Angular 2/4, Objective-CDevOps: Cloudbees Jenkins (declarative pipeline), Docker, AWS (ECS)Also used: Jacoco, Cobertura, SonarQube, Marklogic 8, JSON-LD, SparQL, Falcor, HapiJs, Joi, Sinon, ASP.Net MVC 3/Razor, C#, NUnit, Fluent-NHibernate, SQL Server, Mercurial, jQuery, PHP, ColdFusion, XML, XSD, Hibernate, Velocity, SQL-Oracle, XSLT, SQL-other, XQuery, Spring Framework, Jira/Confluence, TeamCityLike: Macbook Pro, IntelliJ IDEA, Android Studio, Visual Studio Code, Agile Development, Pivotal Tracker, GitLab, exercism.io, Google Ventures 5-Day Sprint (Design Spike)

What can I say? Charitable Causes combined with Small Businesses to create a kind of synergy that would help raise money for good while driving more sales for local businesses and keeping money in the local economy.I could not pass up the experience. Yes, I spent more time doing PHP than I really cared to do (although I did do a little Zend Framework, and that was nice by comparison), and to rue and appreciate the perks that start-ups had access to. And I did a lot of "other tasks and duties as required" like walking door to door to talk to small businesses, go to meet-ups to make connections, things that, as a technologist, don't come naturally.I want to try it again, knowing what I know now. Perhaps in another decade...
  • Matrix Group International
    Web Application Developer
Matrix Group International Aug 2007 - Mar 2012

My first foray into web development, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, .Net/C#/EF4 and ColdFusion, as well as on-site contractor/staff augmentation on an ASP.Net MVC 3 project.Matrix Group International was a great place to work. Hectic, never dull. Nothing rote about the job. The projects varied a lot, and there was a lot to learn. I particularly appreciated the emphasis on security and security awareness and training. And, their environmental awareness was excellent (they recycled and composted!).

On paper: fairly typical mid-level software engineering position requiring involvement in the full software development lifecycle, ability to work in a team or independently. Knowledge of the conservation and taxonomic information management domain are helpful if not critical to performing this job.In real life: one hectic piece of work. Three large projects with heavy web services requirements knocking down the cubicle wall (participation in most, and team lead on one subtask); a big java application suite that needs refactoring into an enterprise data exchange and dynamic automated data synchronization system.
