Within the GILW/KCEW division, under general guidance of the Information Systems Officer (AGRIS/CARIS and Documentation Group), I worked as an Information Management Specialist on the management and implementation of several projects related to Information Systems, Knowledge Organization Systems, Standards and Technologies, with a particular emphasis on Semantic Web and Ontologies.In addition to that, I am in charge of the maintenance and distribution of the WAICENT AGROVOC database, web site and tools; of the implementation of new web interfaces including web services; of the planning of the migration to the AGROVOC Concept Server (an ontology based service).I performed extended work on metadata and metadata standards, in particular in adapting metadata schemes, as well as to produce and manage classification schemes.I have participated and chaired international conferences and workshops, notably related to thesauri, terminology and knowledge systems, free and open source software, semantic technologies, etc.; I have collaborated with several Universities all over the world and gained some international visibility.I participated in the conception and development of the Agricultural Information Management Standards (AIMS) portal, promoting common information and knowledge standards, protocols and methodologies for knowledge management. I have also collaborated to some AGRIS activities, including the customization of the WebAGRIS system.I have been involved in the guidance of partners and collaborators to develop projects related to knowledge management, such as domain specific ontologies, mapping different KOS, and promoting the interaction between two of the main FAO terminology resources (FAOTERM and AGROVOC).
Forestry Information Officer
Under direct supervision of the FODA Director, employed as Forestry Information Officer on an EC-funded project to support joint activities with the International Union of Forestry Research Organisations, Special Programme for Developing Countries (IUFRO-SPDC, Vienna, Austria) on the implementation of a Global Forest Information Service (GFIS) intending to facilitate access to distributed scientific information on forests, by establishing five African regional web servers to allow interoperability search over distributed databases. Specific duties: - Development and organisation of a work plan for implementing the activities of the project; - Liaise with IUFRO Task Force responsible for developing a strategy for GFIS and provide expert knowledge on technical standards in internet applications and metadata standards; - Participate in the definition of standards for forestry information; - In collaboration with all GFIS partners and with guidance from the Task Force, participate in designing and building an internet interface to facilitate access to distributed forestry research metadata and data; - Assist IUFRO in establishing five GFIS nodes in Africa advising on specification and acquisition of selected software and hardware and oversee the deployment of this equipment; - Prepare tools for metadata conversion and data exchange (for import and export between applications); - Undertake all needed travels for meetings, working workshops, and training; - Design and provide all needed training (also to Web Masters on specific technical tools and languages) to African partners to make the web servers and the web sites operational; - Remote support (messaging tools); - Collaborate with FAO/WAICENT and CABI for the Multilingual Forestry Thesaurus project.

Employed by the European Commission at the Ispra Joint Research Centre as GIS expert working for the Global Vegetation Monitoring Unit (GVM) of the Space Application Institute (SAI) to develop an Information System as a structured repository of metadata for geographical data and other resources (documents, websites, images, cartographic maps, etc.) with standalone and web based interfaces.Specific duties: - Revision of the project database structure to enable it to store new types of information and data, such as satellite images and publications and further development of an MS Access interface to allow users to search the satellite image metadata held in the database;- Development of tools to allow the System Administrator and the users to populate the database with specific data types, e.g. GIS layers and satellite images; - Development of a prototype web system for performing queries on catalogues and visualisation of interactive maps (Web Mapping) and GIS analysis with ESRI products; - Responsibility of the development of the new web site of the GVM unit; - Internal training of the GVM unit staff to the use of MS Access.
