My name is Margo Thompson and I am looking for a data analytics or data scientist position. I graduated in May 2023 from Purdue University Fort Wayne with a Master of Science in Mathematics and a Postbaccalaureate Certificate in Applied Statistics. Although my degree is in mathematics, I have 24 credit hours in graduate level statistics/data science courses. Through these courses, I have gained experience applying statistical methods using programming languages such as R and Python. In classroom projects, I have both collaborated with partners and worked individually. By working with others, I practiced and improved my communication and time management skills as well as my leadership and decision-making skills. I am confident that I will be able to produce satisfactory work whether working in a group or individual setting. These projects gave me experience cleaning and wrangling data, performing exploratory data analyses, analyzing data, and using classification and regression methods to create and interpret statistical models. They have also allowed me to gain experience recognizing insights and trends in data. My strong mathematical and statistical backgrounds have enabled me to effectively analyze information and form conclusions, solve problems, and interpret statistical findings in a real-world context. I was selected by the mathematics department to be a graduate teaching assistant as I worked to complete my master’s degree. I was initially assigned to instruct the MA153 College Algebra course here at PFW. I was the sole individual responsible for the class and my duties included lesson planning, grading, lecturing, etc. I was given an important role in my student’s learning and based on positive feedback from students and faculty, I believe I succeeded in this role. I was then selected to be the teaching assistant for the STAT190 Data Mine I with Python and STAT290 Data Mine II with Python courses. I assisted the professor in making sure the class ran smoothly, held the professor’s office hours, and graded all homework assignments. I was also on the Purdue Fort Wayne Women’s Basketball team for two years while completing my undergraduate degree. I took on very demanding and time-consuming tasks, whether as a graduate teaching assistant or student-athlete and was still able to excel in my courses. I am a high achieving, determined, and responsible person. I am a hard worker and I hold myself to a high standard. I will bring this same work ethic into a job setting. I believe I possess the skills and qualities that a data scientist should have.
