Civil Eats is an award-winning daily news source for critical thought about the American food system. Civil Eats was named the James Beard Foundation's Publication of the Year, has been inducted into the Library of Congress, awarded the 2020 IACP Digital Media Award for Best Group Food Blog, the 2022 IACP Digital Media Award for Best Newsletter, and received many more awards and accolades.

As a freelancer, I've edited cookbooks and literary food books, including:* The Canal House cookbook series (volumes 1-8), and Canal House Cooks Every Day (Andrews McMeel, 2012), created by Melissa Hamilton and Christopher Hirsheimer* Poet of the Appetites: The Lives and Loves of M.F.K. As the company's lead copywriter, I wrote and/or edited marketing materials (package copy, emails, ads) and longer-form stories and essays for our website and the Patagonia Journal. As the company's recipe editor, I oversaw the development and testing of recipes using Provisions foods. I also edited the first Provisions Journal, with stories on the microbiome of the soil and carbon drawdown, beer brewed with regenerative Kernza grain, hook-and-line mackerel fishing in the North Atlantic, and more.

Produced, edited, and wrote food and travel stories and developed fresh, seasonal recipes for a 120-year-old regional lifestyle magazine with 1.25 million print subscribers. Managed up to 10 food staff and freelancers. Grew our digital following and engagement rate through posts and videos on Sunset.com, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Wrote and edited several cookbooks; staged cooking demos at Sunset and offsite; and worked with sales, marketing, and senior editorial staff on brand development strategies (digital partnerships, native advertising, special events). Hosted bi-weekly segment “A Drink and a Snack” and weekly segment “In the Kitchen With” on Facebook Live, reaching as many as 50,000+ viewers per segment. Helped win Sunset its first James Beard award by initiating and guiding a backyard farming blog and franchise (magazine articles, a book, and a West-wide contest).

Traveled extensively to report stories on location all over the world, including bringing back authentic recipes; planned and supervised all aspects of production, from developing issue lineups to assigning, producing, packaging, and editing articles. During my time at Saveur, the magazine received 8 National Magazine Award nominations (winning 2) and 25 James Beard Journalism Award nominations (winning 12).

Edited and wrote food and travel features and columns; edited recipes and menus in close collaboration with up to 8 test-kitchen staff.

Assigned and edited all feature stories, on a range of topics from food to design; reviewed restaurants for the fourth largest city in the country.
