Cape Cod Veterinary Specialists mission is to provide the highest level of veterinary care not only to the pets that come into their hospital but also the people who love them. Primarily worked in the surgical department along three board certified surgeons as a scrub nurse, nurse anesthetist, post-op care, admit & discharge nurse and assisted with appointments for orthopedic and soft tissue surgeries. Time was spent in the Emergency and Critical Care and Internal Medicine department as well. Following graduating from undergrad, I competed a 6mo. internship at the International Fund for Animal Welfare in their Marine Mammal Rescue and Research department. Cape Cod is known to be a global hotspot for cetacean strandings. There is no other place in the world where cetaceans strand as frequently as they do on Cape Cod. Post internship, I remained on the team as paid contract support as a Temporary Standing Technician. I gained skills in managing shared coverage of a 24-hour stranding reporting hotline. During solo and mass cetacean stranding events knowledge was gained in boat based herding efforts, animal restrain & stretchering, roto & satellite tagging, veterinary medicine including blood collection, injectable medication and IV fluid therapy. Was part of their annual pinniped remote sedation disentanglement efforts and aided with H. grypus behavior studies at the Chatham Fish Pier and haulout surveying by boat and land. Frequently worked in extreme weather elements and on rough terrains. Necropsy roles included: level A data collection, cutting, sampling, photography, and necropsy report. Received training to safely operate and maintain diesel trucks, ATVs, trailers, and boats. Wrote blogs for social media outlets. Mentored volunteers and interns.

Throughout my undergraduate studies I served as a work study student at the University of New England’s Marine Animal Rehabilitation and Conservation Program. The center would rehabilitate roughly one hundred pinnipeds, sea turtles and cetaceans annually. A student’s animal husbandry tasks included: data entry, enclosure cleaning, food preparation, animal restraint, gastric tube feeding, behavioral monitoring, assisting with physical exams and medical procedures. Running onsite diagnostics included: blood chemistry, microbiology, urine & fecal analysis. As well as running water quality on both a closed and open saltwater system to monitor e. coli, the nitrogen cycle and chlorine levels. Upperclassmen would assist in training new volunteers and interns. Also provided support for annual 5K fundraiser to assist with securing raffle prizes, donors, participants, and event support. I was the organization’s photographer for events, social media, and patient documentation. At the student level I represented at the 2013 Board of Trustees meeting for the University of New England.

Throughout my undergraduate studies I volunteered as a field responder for Marine Mammals of Maine. This opportunity paired nicely with my time at UNE’s Marine Animal Rehabilitation and Conservation Program to give me the ‘full circle’ beach to beach, stranded to release experience. A field responder would respond to live or dead stranded marine mammals along the shoreline of southern Maine. Live response included: level A data collection, observe behavior, assist with 24-hour monitoring, collection for rehabilitation or relocation. Postmortem responsibilities included: level A data, carcass removal, necropsy aid and compost marine mammal remains. I would assist in training new volunteers & interns and help at the biyearly training sessions. Providing public education played a large role in response work. I would provide support for their annual 5K fundraiser to help with securing raffle prizes, participants, and event support. I was the organization’s photographer for events, social media, and patient documentation.
