Larson Livestock originated in Alma Center, Wisconsin where the Larson family began raising sheep and later added cattle and pigs. In December of 2014, my family relocated to Aitkin, Minnesota where we have continued to increase our Suffolk sheep flock, Angus and Angus crossbred beef cattle herd and improve our crossbred market hog genetics. In December of 2014, my family relocated to Aitkin, Minnesota where we have continued to increase our Suffolk sheep flock, Angus and Angus crossbred beef cattle herd and improve our crossbred market hog genetics. While working at Larson Livestock, I have been responsible for a number of different tasks including, but not limited to:- Managing quality of our Angus beef cattle, Suffolk sheep, and Yorkshire and crossbred hogs. - Maintaining sound herd and flock health by administering the recommended vaccinations after the consultation of a veterinarian.- Monitoring the animal's progress at each stage of growth starting with newborn care.- Recording all dates of importance on online calendars, barn notes, and tri-species records.- Working in the fields at all stages of growth raising corn, soybeans, oats, and alfalfa hay.Throughout my years of working on the family farm, I have learned specifically about the management of our animals. Additionally, I have gained valuable insight in communication, record keeping, responsibility, time management, and the importance of always doing my best work. This included, but was not limited to: - Plant, till and harvest 4500 pumpkin, squash and gourd plants- Prune, thin, monitor and harvest apple, plum and pear trees- Assist customers with spring and fall bareroot tree sale orders- Evaluate corn fields & design and cut corn maze for family fun scavenger hunt - Mow, weed whip, and complete various orchard detail- Manage in-store apple, pumpkin, and agro-tourism sales- Photograph orchard for marketing material, to promote their business on social media profiles & company website - Operate heavy equipment including: skid-steer, forklift, brush hog, tractor and various implementsThroughout the duration of the growing season, I became comfortable interacting with customers and answering difficult questions, diagnosing apple problems individually, and offering advice to tree owners. I was invested in this internship, dedicating my time and talents in ensuring we produced the highest quality products. It was a true joy watching the crops and fruit grow from blossoms to beautiful fruit for our customers to enjoy. In this position as the Age-to-Age intern, we focused on trying to bring older and younger generations together in interactive activities in order to build community and friendship.
