I saw a need in the military community for an outreach group separate from a religious affiliation. I created Mah Jong Mammas to help military families create connections and community when stationed away from their support network. We are not officially recognized as a community group at any base but exists as a word-of-mouth asset to any spouse in need of support. The group is focused on providing a safe place for spouses to connect and get help in a low stress/nonjudgmental space. We also provide enrichment and friendship building for the preschool age children. The group started in Osan south Korea and has grown to 4 different bases. Each group is connected and able to reach out to all members for any advice or assistant with their needs. Additional we offer support for members to form their own groups as they transition to different military bases. I teach each group how to play Wright-Paterson Mah Jong and encourage each group to meet at least once a month for brunch and play. This creates an avenue for members to come together to relax and support each other. Additional the group provides much needed childcare support during personal emergencies.
