About María Fullaondo
Dr María Fullaondo is practicing architect and academic currently holding a Senior Lecturer position at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. She has extensive international experience in architecture education in various universities (Spain, China, Australia, South Korea and US). Her research combines an educational approach with the practice of architecture. Expanding the traditional boundaries among creative disciplines to date, all her projects—critical and speculative spatial, visual, and textual—are an integrative effort to contribute first to a better understanding and knowledge of architecture, spatial practices, and design in connection with society. Secondly, her work attempts to facilitate a broader engagement with design and art culture, making architecture more accessible not only to practicing architects, designers, academics, and students, but also to a nonspecialized public. Essays, conferences, exhibitions, design projects, and other forms of engagement, including five books published to date evidence these deep connections between, teaching, design research, and practice. Her current research on rhetoric and architecture combines, continues, and expands the research undertaken for more than twenty years. The study explores some creative thought processes related to spatial practices based on rhetorical mechanisms. Also, it explores the potential and role of these strategies as interrogative mechanisms and critical tools for activating and stimulating our social conscience. Next year, some of the findings of this ongoing project will be published. The investigation synthetizes my three major interests or lines of research: (a) dissemination of architecture and experimental modes of criticism in spatial practices; (b) architectural design and design methodologies directly related to the processes of design, thinking, and creation, and (c) drawing not only as the language of architecture, but also as an independent creative discipline. Her PhD on the history of modern architecture through the lenses of the Museum of Modern Art was awarded the First Prize in the most prestigious award in Spain for an architectural thesis, resulting in its publication as the book, Casas en el Jardín del MOMA: La Consolidación de un Museo. Her co-author book, The Drawing Bazaar (2015) provides a new perspective on the meaning and scope of the term ‘drawing’ and its impact on the education and performance of contemporary architects.
