About Maria Heath
I received my PhD in Linguistics because I have a genuine passion for language and wanted to learn as much as I could from an academic standpoint before moving on to learn a new perspective in an industry position! What I'm most interested in about language is the way people write, especially as writing has become such a common part of our daily interactions in the digital world. I'm fascinated to see how writing has begun to evolve naturally with use in similar ways to spoken/signed language, and how it reflects our social structures. Most of my research projects have centered around non-standard typography on social media, such as capitalization, punctuation, and spelling, and how people make meaning from creative patterns. I hope to bring my knowledge of various writing styles, as well as my general passion for language, into a career in editing or publishing. I would love to both share my own expertise on the linguistic aspect of writing as well as to learn new ways of thinking about how people use writing to express themselves and to create meaning.
