Hello, my name is Maria Isabel Bayardo and I am currently working as a Research Associate III at The Aerospace Corporation. As a member of the Polymers & Composites group in the Space Materials Laboratory, I have been able to support path-finding material research and failure analysis by characterizing materials via thermal analysis, atomic force microscopy, and mechanical testing. I am able to use my materials background and manufacturing experience when assisting in the design and execution of experiments meant to support a variety of programs and customers.I graduated from UCLA in December of 2020 with a Bachelors of Science in Materials Engineering and enjoy being able to apply my technical background in a fast-paced and hands-on position. My previous experience includes internships with The Boeing Company in Everett, WA and The Aerospace Corporation in El Segundo, CA. I also worked with Raytheon Intelligence & Space in Dallas, TX after graduating from UCLA.

Polymers & Composites Technical InternThe Aerospace Corporation Jun 2020 - Sep 2020El Segundo, California, United StatesAs a part of the Materials Science Department in the Space Materials Laboratory, assisted with various programs related to the use of polycyanurate resin systems in structural composites. One novel film adhesive was investigated for its compatibility with atmospheric plasma treatment to improve strength in bonding applications. Contact angle measurements and XPS data were used to look at the degree of polarization due to reactive oxygen species from the plasma, as well as how that oxygen was functionalized. Another resin was evaluated for its response to moisture exposure by examining the curing kinetics and thermal decomposition behavior. FTIR and DSC analysis was done to look at the changes in the chemical species present in the resin as a function of moisture and degree of cure, while TGA indicated changes in thermal stability. Flatwise tensile tests were then conducted to correlate these trends to mechanical properties. -

Experience using a Microscale Combustion Calorimeter for tests concerning material heat release properties and a rheometer for ink and paint quality control.
