About Maria Leonard

I am Director of the Invented Futures research platform looking at the ways the "the future" is formed, experienced, anticipated and re-steered centred around emerging technology, which has collaborated with Liverpool Museums, Bristol Digital Futures Institute, UCL, The Yard Theatre, the Grant Museum, the Centre for Global Knowledge Studies, Centre for Gender & Technology at Cambridge University, based at Spike Island Bristol. It aims to articulate alternatives to the dominant ways "the future" is produced.I am currently the Curatorial Research Fellow, creating a programme focused on the function of culture in the future city, unruly art, working class cultural production, and financialization, titled 'kicking the back door in', funded by Goethe Institut Berlin.I am producer of the LIMINALITY public engagement series focusing on liminal mental states and the cultural/political construction of the threshold between madness and rationality, as well as the conscious and the unconscious, order and disorder, currently funded by/in collaboration with the Plasticity Lab at Cambridge led by Professor Tamar Makin, MIND Foundation Berlin and Brecht Haus Berlin. I am also about to produce the Grief Time series in collaboration with the AHRC-funded Grief: A Study of Human Emotional Experience Project at York University. This is a series of workshops, cultural events, performance and readings centred on the diverse ways time can shape the meaning and significance of different grief experiences. In collaboration with the National Poetry Library Southbank Centre and Manchester Poetry Library.I am a writer who has appeared in Modern Queer Poets published by Richard Porter and Pilot Press, the Verve Poetry Press edited by Andrew McMillan/Verve Poetry Festival, the Soho Theatre London and the Young Company at Almeida Theatre London. I was shortlisted for the Women Poets' Prize 2022. I was commissioned by ACUD Theater Berlin to write and devise a solo performance in July 2022. This was then selected for the Engine Room development programme at Omnibus Theatre London.I have appeared in discussions at the York Festival of Ideas 2022, Bristol Technology Festival and Imagine! Festival of Ideas and Politics 2022 in Belfast. I was commissioned to create and deliver a public lecture series at University of the Arts Berlin in 2022 and I'm a course leader at the Bishopsgate Institute.
