The mission of Colorado Health Network (CHN) is to equitably meet the evolving needs of people affected by HIV and other health conditions through prevention, care, and advocacy. Founded in 1983, CHN is Colorado’s oldest and largest source of services and programs for people living with HIV (PLWH) or people impacted by HIV.

The North Denver Cornerstone Collaborative’s (NDCC) Women Who Lead (WWL) leadership program is a 12-week leadership workshop for the women of Globeville, Elyria, and Swansea (GES) in North Denver. The goal of this program is to build capacity among the women in GES; educate the participants regarding city resources, financial literacy, resume building, leadership skills, and goal setting. Through this program participants will complete their own StrengthsFinders assessment and learn how best to leverage their greatest strengths. Each participant will also be paired with their own mentor through the program to facilitate their personal growth through individualized personal development plans. Many of the workshop sessions will be taught by local industry leaders.

As the Director of Health Promotions (HP) I built and maintained key partnerships, developed and evaluated programs, and was part of the senior management team providing general organizational counsel. Clinica Tepeyac provides culturally competent health care and preventive health services for the medically under-served.

As the Community Planning Coordinator I assisted in the development of the HIV Strategic Jurisdictional Plan for the State of Colorado, was the liaison between Community Planning Group (CPG) members and Department of Health (DOH) policy makers and provide information and support to CPG members, and other stakeholders. The alliance works with the STI/HIV/viral hepatitis department to determine the best ways to prevent, care and treat HIV and AIDS in Colorado. It promotes statewide collaboration and information sharing among HIV/AIDS service providers, public health agencies, community members, those affected by HIV and medical, behavioral and social scientists. It is an expert source for the state on HIV/AIDS issues, resources and trends.

It was my honor to advocate for people living with HIV disease and this experience influenced my view on the importance of healthcare access, engagement, and navigation. In this position I led needs assessment and evaluation processes, strategic planning and honed my community engagement skills. Most importantly I learned that leadership means you listen to learn, follow others, practice transparency and focus on the community you serve. The DHRPC was responsible to set priorities for the HIV services most needed in the Denver Transitional Grant Area (TGA), decides how much money should be used for each of these services (resource allocation), and develops a plan to provide these services (comprehensive plan). These decisions are based on an evaluation of the needs of people living with HIV (needs assessment).

This unique community based organization is a trusted community resource dedicated to client-centered services, in my position I served HIV/AIDS infected individuals and helped them to understand their diagnosis, gain access to medical care, emotional support, and other resources and assistance to meet their needs.
